Strange Message on My Computer

Reply Sun 25 Jan, 2004 07:16 am
I have a new XP Pro. I was surfing the net, when all of a sudden, a full page ad came across my screen. I was unable to "X" it out. All of a sudden, it disappeared, as well as the three windows that I had minimized on my taskbar. When I looked, I found a new icon on my desktop, a Word Pad document, with this information:

I have Zone Alarm. I immediately ran Ad Aware, and then Norton Virus Scan (no viruses).

What does the message mean, and what, if anything, am I supposed to do with the information?

Seems, some have (had) the same problems:
Java Technology Forums

(And a google search even gives more questions about that - unfortunately no quick answers, as far as I saw. Sad

Walter, that thread you linked to looks like it's a similar problem but actually it's unrelated. That person had an issue with the Java YPCLSP.dll library (related to Yahoo Parental Controls, as that site says).

Phoenix32890, there are 2 posibilities:

Either the Java library that crashed has been corrupted or is out of date for a program which requires it, or a program which uses that Java plugin is improperly accessing it.

It might be an exploit type trojan that your virus scanner doesn't consider a virus since it is only a prelude to virus. Possibly it's an incorrect function call to a dll by a mother trojan.

If I were you though, I wouldn't really worry about it too much. But let us know if you ever get the same error log again.

You can download the latest Sun Java here:

Monger- Thanks for the help. I went to the link that you mentioned, and apparently, there was an update. So I downloaded it.

Stupid question: I am used to Win98SE. When it crashed, I would get an error message, with that "X" in a red circle, and I would have to reboot. I have heard that when XP crashes, the whole system does not go down. Was what I had a "crash"?

Windows didn't crash in this case. Java and IE crashed, and Java wrote the error log to your desktop.

One thing though Phoenix...because it was an ad that caused the crash I think it's good to be a bit extra suspicious. You might try downloading Spybot and running it after getting the latest updates for it (it's more current than Ad-Aware), and make sure to get the latest critical Windows Updates. I'd also avoid the site that gave that ad in the future.
