I am writing a cultural and social guidebook to Hong Kong (I lived there from 1979 to 1997) and would like some input from anyone there, or who has lived there since to bring me up to date. Is there anyone out there who could help?? Very Happy

acepoly lives there. And there are others.

I lived there briefly as a young child, but that was quite a bit before 97.

I was there in the early 80's I was very young so I don't remember that much of cultural value (just things like getting lost in an airport and bawling my eyes out and such).

I spent a week in Hong Kong in 1964. Not a thing that could help anybody; just thought I'd mention it.

Chinese traditional culture is giving way to its western counterpart, and in this respect, Hong Kong has been taking the lead. The 'assimulation' is taking place under the guise of globalization and the spread of market economy. The handover of Hong Kong to China makes Hong Kong a strong foothold from where western ideology further penetrates into the hinterland of China. Though it might be appealing to have the western 'humanist' ideology, the ebbing of the Chinese traditional arouses much pity!

That's interesting, some people have suggested that the handover means HK is becoming more Chinese, and the Western influence is waning. Where are you from, acepoly, mainland China?

Hi Clary,
I live in hongkong and have been here since 1993. Post handover I would say that frankly due to recession hitting in, the Hongkong locals have been welcoming mainland chinese with open arms compared to before. Mainlanders are now able to visit hongkong frequently and have a lot of cash, that's why westerners seem to be lesser in number:)
In case u wondering, I am Indian not caucasion.
Any other queries that u would like to solve, feel free to ask me.

Hi Neena, thanks for your comments. I went back to HK in August and caught up with things a bit. How has it been for the Indian community since the handover? Have most of you got British passports? My husband used to work in Immigration Branch and liaised with the Indian community leaders in the 80s to try and get a good deal for them.

Hi Clary,
Sorry for the delay. Well, nothing much has changed for the Indians in Hongkong. After the handover, Indians with a BNO passport could apply for the full British passport due to the Ethnic Minorities Act. Businesswise and socially, everything is the same:)

Good, so the philosophy 'Let's all shut up and make money!' still applies! (Do you know the Lily Wong cartoons of Larry Feign - you might like to see them at humorist dot net)
