I started reading "Opal" today. It is the biography of Opal Whiteley, written by Katherine Beck. I had never heard of her before but as an Oregonian I felt duty bound to pursue the story.
Apparently she was very, very famous and still has quite a cult following.
And apparently, her story and history is very controversial.
Is anyone out there familiar with Opal and her story? Who do you really think she was?
Before this moment, I didn't know anything about her, I'm reading up on some websites. She sounds like she was very interesting.
Interesting. And confusing.....
I really just started the book so all I know is that nobody seems to know.
It makes me think that the pressed fairies books were based on her.
That could be, little k. But it seems that her books as well as her "history" was based on many other people's works.
Quite a character, this Opal.
Since it's just me and you..... how have you been?
Hey little k -- I don't know if you're still checking this thread but I thought I would pass on this strange coincidence....
I was at work today telling a co-worker about this "Opal" book. One of the clients waiting in the studio started questioning me about it - turns out his family name, on his mother's side, is Whiteley and there is currently an "Anut Opal".
He didn't know much about the Whitleley side of his family but that they were originally from Washington State (same as in the book) and that they came to Oregon around the turn of the century.
Anyway - I told his that he's got to check out this book; maybe he'd recognize some of the faces in the photos.
They're supposed to report back to me when they come to collect their prints.
Pretty cool, huh?
What I've read about Opal's diary on line makes me think about Kingfisher Days, which I listened to on radio, and just bought to read.

I love this sort of thing.
Thanks e-Beth - that looks like a real find. I'll have to look for that book.
