What kind of an answer is that supposed to be? Get busy on that 250 word report. Yours had only 21, unless you count contractions as 2 words.
Taking the contrary view is easy for me, and more accurate to the situation we have growing in this land, of extreme individualism and rejection of rationalism and nationalism in favor of sectionalism, and irrationality...
Some problems are always going to be national problems, and they may even have their international aspects...Much of what states hold as their own could be managed locally, or individually if freedom were really a concern, and the power of states given through the Senate gives to the holders of great areas of land the same power that should properly belong in the hands of the people in a democracy...
Anyone not living on the coast, or on some great river, or in an area prone to great storms might well conclude that it is a waste of money to help those who are subject to natural calameties... Why should anyone do anything for anyone not likely to do anything for us??? You see what I mean; that all sectionalism, as partyism is becoming, is aimed at the destruction of nation because it puts sectional, religious, or partisan issues before the national good, and in short, pits us against them -for the gain of a few already with the goods of society...
It is destructive of our national defense because from the perspective of winners and losers alike, there is no US to defend, and those with the goods are inclined to mount an individual defense of their possessions that they feel are threatened by democracy, and to hate the government they feel is in the possession of so many losers promoting a tyranny of the majority...
This country is in a state of revolt whether anyone cares to admit it or not... People still say the pledge of alliegence, but to those for whom it is not mere formality, the meaning of what they are swearing to may be radicalism in ideal and intent... There is no America... In spite of our ability to travel we do not know each other, what is in our souls, what we stand for, and perhaps, if we did we might shoot on sight... So many for so long have been allowed to entertain treasonous ideas, to pound into the brains of their children the thought that America was out to get you, take your guns and Bibles, and clap you into servitude of some united nations, and give all your money to low rent negroes... And the Federal Government, afraid of everyone, has done little to prove them wrong...In many respects it would not matter what one person thinks of another, but with whole groups holding negative opinions of other whole groups and doing their best to use the other groups for one reason or another without getting dirty hands or going to prison for it means the destruction of nationhood, national identity...
For example: The Mexicans imported into this country by the thousands were not brought here out of love, but hate, and the desire to exploit that people as sub humans, and not deserving of equal rights... The reason the domestic population of blacks was not doing the jobs given to Mexicans is that it smelled like slavery to those nursing a living memory of slavery, and it was... Does anyone believe that those displaced by Mexican labor, or those who only sought to use them without love or concern or justice will now love them that they form a sizable voting block???... They conceal their hatred of the Mexican as socially and politically unacceptable, and heap their contempt upon the process of democracy, such as we have it, insured by Federal oversight...
Laws are made out of our fear and hatred of each other, and not out of our love and affection for each other... Nations are built out of love, and enmity is made out of laws... The laws that bind us only keep us from bloodshed, and there has been no approach from the Federal government to the love and justice that would make of us a single nation of people...That FEMA can go unfunded after so much has been done with it in the South and middle West is beyond understanding... This is not about the protection of property, but about the protection of wealth... What do the rich in a state care if the poor should suddenly be flooded out??? It is just more property for the rich to seize... But every cent going for disaster help taken from the rich takes also from their ability to exploit natural disasters for their own benefit...The rich can afford insurance that the poor cannot... Do you see what I mean???
The rich think laws stand alone as things in themselves, so they are willing to cut themselves off from national responsibility and obligation, thinking the thing will stand alone without the wealth they have taken out of it, and it will not stand... Social programs, education, retirement, access to medicine are not apart from the national defense and the military or police... Social programs like social consciousness are the defense of nation... National defenses fail when people no longer feel they have something to die for, and we don't have anything worth dieing for....
