Are non-profit organizations permitted to engage in for-profit activities? If yes, do they have to pay taxes on the revenue/profits? Must it be reported on an organization's Form 990?

Nonprofits are required to pay payroll and sales taxes.
If they earn unrelated business income exceeding certain limits, they are required to file a tax return.
