This is Larry the cat.
He recently achieved fame beyond his wildest dreams!
He emerged from obscurity to become the new "ratter" at 10 Downing St, where British prime ministers reside.
Now he is being snapped by reporters all the time!
Should have happened long ago, if you ask me!
Isn't he beautiful? :

Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister David Cameron unveiled the newest recruit to 10 Downing Street on Tuesday: a cat called Larry with a "very strong predatory drive" for catching rodents.

The four-year-old tabby joined Cameron and his family from London's Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to tackle pest control issues after a rodent was spotted on the steps of the most famous front door in the land.

This is Larry's new owner: David Cameron, PM.
Some in the UK think Mr Cameron is something of a rat himself.
But let's not go there on this thread. This is about critters of the famous, not a politics thread, OK?
Here he is pretending to love puppies. A sure winner with the electorate! Wink

So you get the idea?
On this thread we will be giving the pets of the famous, the powerful & the successful the attention that they richly deserve!
At last!
Why should their owners get all the fame, I say?
That's just not right.

Please feel free to add your contributions here.

But did you know that Hitler was a dog lover?
Especially Blondi, his Alsation, who he kept by his side till the end.
Alas, poor Blondi had no say in who her owner was. I suspect he would have chosen better:

Did Hitler have a favorite pet animal?

Here's a photograph of a quite famous monarch.
She is rumoured to prefer the company of her beloved corgis to that of humans ... including some members of her own family!
Quite right, too!
Visiting dignitaries have reported that , when attending afternoon tea with her majesty, that the corgis have the run of the palace!
Now there's a woman who has her priorities right! Very Happy :

OK, I'll leave it here for now, though I can think of quite a few more! ... but I'm really hoping that I've encouraged you to post your own pictures & stories of famous critters & their doting owners.
I mean it's high time these creatures received the fame & credit which is rightly theirs, yes? Smile

It doesn't matter from what time in history, or what the owner was famous for.
Let's hear it for the critters!

But please excuse my ignorance: who is Neil Gaiman & what is his claim to fame? (Besides having absolutely exquisite dogs? Smile )

@tsarstepan,
Ah. Thanks, tsar. The name sounded very familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

OK. One more. I can't help myself!

Richard Nixon & his dog, Checkers:

Checkers was the inspiration for this deeply moving speech by Richard Nixon. It has been called the "Checkers Speech" ever since . Here's the part of the speech which refers to Checkers...:

@dlowan,
I didn't know that, Deb, but now that you mention it .....

She does have rather endearing cat-like features.

I guess that comes from sharing your life with so many cats, for so many years?

I can just see her going "meow", in the nicest possible way, of course! And she would look excellent with cat's whiskers! Wink

President Clinton had at least one other famous pet while at the white house.
I'll leave it there. Wink

One of my very favourite authors, possibly the one I most revere, is Doris Lessing.

Doris adored cats. Here's a quote from one of her short stories about cats:

Quote:
"What a luxury a cat is, the moments of shocking and startling pleasure in a day, the feel of the beast, the soft sleekness under your palm, the warmth when you wake on a cold night, the grace and charm even in a quite ordinary workaday puss. Cat walks across your room, and in that lonely stalk you see leopard or even panther, or it turns its head to acknowledge you and the yellow blaze of those eyes tells you what an exotic visitor you have here, in this household friend, the cat who purrs as you stroke, or rub his chin, or scratch his head."
— Doris Lessing (The Old Age of El Magnifico)

A young Doris with cat:

A much older Doris & cat. (She's now in her late 80s).:

And she wrote about her cats, often. (Of course, she wrote about other subjects most of the time, but cats have remained a life-long passion.) :

our Prime Minister and his family foster cats

http://www.pm.gc.ca/grfx/PM-splashgraphic-Kittens.jpg

All too often, family pets such as dogs and cats find themselves in shelters as a result of being abandoned or rescued.

The Harpers are proud to support and participate in the Ottawa Humane Society’s Foster Program, which provides temporary homes for pets in the community who are not yet ready for adoption.

The program fosters out animals with mild health or behaviour issues who need individual care and nurturing to help them recover before they are adopted by new, loving foster families.

Laureen and Stephen have been foster parents to many cats during the past year. At any given time, the Harpers have provided foster care to numerous cats at their Ottawa home.
