Okay, so this was about 20 years ago or so, but I read a short story in my literature book about a huge hole/sinkhole in the ground that ended up being a bottomless pit. The citizens of the area threw things into it after it mysteriously opened up--a pebble, a rock, various trash--but never heard anything at the bottom. So they ended up making it basically a landfill for everything....threw all their trash into it and had a clean planet.
However, at the end of the story, one of the characters looks up at the sky and a pebble falls onto his head.
Does anyone remember this story? What is it called? Who writes it?!
@lskippers,
I wish I could help.
I'm just bookmarking this thread in hope that someone else will remember because it sounds like a pretty cool story.
@lskippers,
I did a search when I first read this and couldn't come up with anything. It sounded maybe Shel Silversteinish (didn't turn up anything) or Daniel Pinkwaterish (nope).
