"Vows commit us to the work ahead, psychological and spiritual. They insist we cultivate mercy and awareness. That we do the work it takes to offer all we are."
- Stephen and Ondrea Levine, Embracing the Beloved

Could anyone explain this quotation. The last sentence is confusing.

Vows = promises, commitment

They (the vows) require us to grow so that we have mercy and awareness.
They (vows) require that we do the necessary things so that we are able to give ourself completely.
