Why do Americans hate taxes. I'm not saying I love paying taxes, however, I appreciate the social structure I've grown accustomed to, so I pay. You pay far less than most western countries per person. So why the hate, do you not feel a government should not tax?
Who should pay for the roads, jails, hospitals, schools, pensions, libraries, police and army, for example... and how should these necessaties be paid for otherwise?
@Ceili,
Personally, I don't have a problem with it.
I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about politics, and I'm not that interested in it.
So, I figure that's why I don't understand when I hear in the same breath "Cut our taxes and give us more/better services and stuff."
Maybe I'm just a simple chai, and can't understand such things.
@Ceili,
I'm with Chai. Taxes should be how we invest in ourselves. Americans have been penny wise pound foolish for decades. Americans will vote for the guy who wants to spend trillions overseas in a pointless war, but will publicly stone the guy (and worse- call him a Socialist! OhmyGod) who even suggests we spend any of it on infrastructure, healthcare and education. Go figure. We're short-sighted idiots.
@Green Witch,
It could be that this is the impression people get of Americans, because the Americans who think this way are the loudest.
OMG did someone say Socialist?
@chai2,
I think that is partially true, but our last 30 years of tax policy proves we vote for people who are graduates of the anti-tax school.
@Ceili,
Half our society promotes Greed as one of the highest virtues. Hard to see those people supporting taxes.

@Cycloptichorn,
We've handed our freedoms over to corporations and they now write the policies. Corporations hate taxes.

I don't know about half the society, but I do think you're onto something here.
Greedy people are quite vocal.
