The best money I ever spent

Reply Fri 14 Jan, 2011 10:36 pm
Today I spent $200 to have The Reptile Man do a presentation at Mo's birthday party.

I had a 15 foot cobra* slithering across my floor, flaring it's hood, staring at my shoe. Mo had an alligator on his head. He kissed a beaded lizard*. He held a rattlesnake-. He held a baby giant tortoise. He held a 20 foot albino something*. He held a green mamba*. He and his friends were stunned and amazed.

I don't throw a lot of parties but I did good this time. I realize that $200 is a lot of money but for the first time in a long time I felt like I bought something that was worth every penny.

Nature frikken rocks!

But it kind of makes me sad that you have to buy nature.

What was the last thing you bought that you thought was worth the money you spent on it?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mo,
and congratulations on the success of your party.

I usually get good value.
I can 't remember anything in particular.

@boomerang,
Some really excellent cheese made by a new farm and cheese company in my area, but I don't think it was anywhere near as cool as The Reptile Man. Wish I could get him across country for my husband's birthday. Good pick, Mo Mom.

@OmSigDAVID,
Thank you! I'll pass those wishes on to Mo.

It's great that you feel like you get good value. I'm a pretty careful shopper but I still find that most things don't live up to my expectations. It's a good feeling to think your money was well spent.

@Green Witch,
After last night's dinner of noise, pizza and cake I could really go for some excellent cheese (with some nice crusty bread..... <sigh>)

Mo actually picked it -- we told him he could have a gift of he could have the reptile man party. He chose well, I don't think he'll ever forget it.

@boomerang,
Experiences are what make a life, not stuff.

(Even I would have been a little afraid of that giant snake.)

I was about 18, and working as a receptionist. An adorable young guy comes up to me and casually asks about the magazines that I like. Bottom line, I ended up spending $75- on magazines that I really didn't want. This was in the late '50's, so $75- was a lot of money.

It was the best $75- that I ever spent. NO ONE can sell me ANYTHING. At the time, it was an expensive lesson, but in retrospect, it was worth every penny.

Boomer- I think that your party for Mo was a stroke of genius. I'll bet that it will be something that he will remember for the rest of his life!

@dadpad,
Thanks for the video, dadpad, I learned something new from that. Australia has so many deadly animals that I'm surprised kids don't have to take that class in school!

a couple of years ago, Merge records celebrated their 20th anniversary with a box set consisting of 12 compilation cd's (hand picked by 12 different cool folks, including David Byrne, Peter Buck, Zach Galifianakas, Jonathan Lethem to name a few), the set also included a cd of remixes of selected merge artists songs, a cd of merge covers by non merge artists, a comedy cd by Scharpling & Wurster and a book containing a picture of every Merge release, all in a cool little box

they also included several digital downloads throughout the year, including a live album from Superchunk (band members Mac & Laura own the label) and a selection of out of print singles from the early days of the label, it was a limited run and all proceeds above production costs went to 12 different charities chosen by the album compilers

@Phoenix32890,
ACK! Thank goodness for hindsight and lessons learned!

Buyer's remorse is one of the worst feelings ever. I think it would be interesting to see one of those brain scan studies about what's going on in someone's head when they experience it. It's an intense emotion!

@djjd62,
Cool! A prized possession, I'm sure.

I treat myself to nice photo books on occasion and have never regretted one.

When I was 11,
against my better judgment,
I left some of my property exposed to theft
(in my brief absence) upon the assurances
of some 13 year old boys that thay 'd not steal them.

It was a good lesson, to follow my common sense.
I adopted the lifelong filosofy: " don 't trust anyone with more than u r willing to lose."

Thay rendered me a good service.

@JTT,
Thank you!

I'm really psyched because several parents of kids who came to the party have called for info on how to hire him for a variety of events which means that the kids really liked it!

We have had reptilian presentations at several Mensa Regional Gatherings,
but thay don 't let us take the snakes up in the hot air balloons.
