I hear footsteps coming around the darkened corner of book laden aisles. I rush to re-shelve a hardcover book; it slips from my sweaty palm to collide with the concrete floor. Standing rigid, I breathe quietly, praying to be invisible. My prayer answered, the disinterested interloper strolls past. A hasty glance over my shoulder, I jump back inside the cover.
What does the last sentence mean? What is the meaning of "cover"?
@Nancy88,
This is a person in a book store or library who wants to disappear in the pages, between the covers of a book. The cover is the book jacket and presumably the person would like to get lost in the story, not reality.
