Best Overall Band EVER?!?!

Reply Fri 19 Dec, 2003 09:20 pm
Who are the best bands ever?

I am talking overall talent, not which ones do you like the best, or which make the best sounding music. Which ones are the best, talentwise?

My tops few are:

Pantera, Guns N' Roses, Sabbath, Van Halen. The list could go on for a long time, but I'd like to see your opinion.

I'm sure you'll get all of the obvious answers, so I'll suggest a less remembered one. TALENTWISE, I'll go with the "Damn Yankees"

This is a nice thread, the kind I like best. This is an impossible thread, though... where talent is being held out as objective over subjective ideas such as prefference and sound. An interesting paradox... as some might find that talent itself is a subjective caption that contains prefference and sound. If talent is not subjective, then who among us posses the right to judge?

And... is that particular question objective or subjective?

If the question is objective, by what means do we judge who has the right to answer? I have some talent of my own... (or do I?) I've been playing the six-string for over 20 years... does that include me with those who would have the right to judge?

Depends on how you look at it. If it's objective, then there has to be a standard to go by.

If it's subjective, then the whole matter is a mute point, isn't it?

Heheh... in my opinion, (subjective) objectivity and artistry cannot co-exist.

My favorite band of all time is Pink Floyd. They certainly are the most talented band ever, because I like 'em... they sound good.

Yaa... it's all subjective.

What do we mean by best OVERALL band? I'd say, the one where each member of the band could stand alone as a stellar player of his or her insturment. Yes comes to mind.

Or the band that makes the best OVERALL genre music. A party band comes to mind.

Or the band that looks best in OVERALLS... Foggy Mountain Boys with Flatts and Scruggs

Fellow musicians.

The question is which band is the most talented? Which band has the most talent at their particular craft.

I'd say Cream, and Pantera have are 2 of the most talented bands ever.

Cream had tons of GREAT blues guitarists, and Pantera had the greatest metal guitarist, and the best metal drummer.

Another band that deserves honorable mention, is CSNY, just for the pure musicianship they had.

It's REALLY hard to get past Cream for this little honor here.

Another band that comes to mind is The Who... Daltry's talent might be questionable, but Entwhistle, Moon, and Townshend are/were just huge piles of talent. I would pick Keith Moon over John Bohnam for a super-band any day.

We ought to have a super-band thread...
