sledding safety certification

I'm thinking any child wanting to ride on a sled should be required to take a sledding safety course resulting in certification of his/her safe sledding; in addition, every child wishing to go sledding should only be allowed to access areas with less than a 3% grade, supervised by a certified adult every 22 feet, no less than 30 feet between sleds and helmets must be worn at all times.

Quote:
A study published earlier this year showed that every kid's favorite snow day tradition could be more dangerous than parents in the past thought. In the study, published in the journal Pediatrics in September, researchers found that 230,000 sledding-related injuries were reported by emergency rooms from 1997-2007.

Analysis of the data showed that children 10 to 14 sustained 42.5% of injuries, and boys were almost 10% more likely to sustain injuries than girls.

The findings, which showed that the most frequent injuries were fractures and other injuries to the head, gave doctors more reason to push safer sledding practices.

@dyslexia,
wi-fi and cell phones would also be prohibited as well as cocoa containing lactose or corn syrup sweeteners.

@Rockhead,
The crap and stunts that I did while sledding down a steep but short icy hill towards car traffic could have caused anyone heart attacks. Helmets are only useful for people that have common sense and brains - something I had serious lacking thereof. It surely was exciting ... damned adrenaline junkie that I was.

I sledded as a kid, by bending corrugated iron into sled shapes, then gliding on one down the grassy hills of California. Sure, I sliced my wrist and arm a few times on the sharp edges, but I survived it.

@dyslexia,
You think all kids are special or somethin'?

We sledded in our square roasting pan (the sides angled outwards) and turkey roasting pans - metal on ice is dangerous and exciting! You couldn't have paid us to wear a helmet.
