@DrewDad,
the solution is obvious.

there needs to be a fun sensor built into the computers.

if the person on the dole starts to enjoy themselves, the unit shuts off...

look - you're at it again

what are you suggesting people read into that?

something other than "oh, all those government money recipients at Walmart, they don't mind spending my money on something I don't think is reasonable" ?

you're obviously gone into a Walmart for some reason - what do you think people think about you when they see you there?

You may not realize how you come across when you post here, but man you sure don't sound like an empathetic person.

I think the government should be providing more free, wireless internet in general. Not just in public housing but pretty much wherever there are enough people to make it worth it.

I think providing wireless broadband as a utility has almost as big an impact as having public schools and this is yet another area where America is falling behind.

The bang for the buck makes free wifi a no-brainer in many scenarios (pretty much any downtown area would make sense). It does more than just bring connectivity to people, it is critical infrastructure with big implications for the economy (whole industries would change if wifi were ubiquitous). Broadband penetration is the modern equivalent of a literacy rate and one of the no-brainer spends. Every city with more than 250,000 people should offer free wifi zones already.

Instead of net neutrality litigation we should be appealing for wifi as a public utility. The transformative nature of the internet is so worth spending on to make it that open and ubiquitous a platform.

So, what's the matter with dialup? I use it. It's good for a2k, it's good for chats if that's your interest. What it is not so good for is downloading videos. On a good day, a 5 minute video takes over 30 minutes to load. Is downloading videos one of our necessities now?

No, our library system is inadequate for more than checking email. They allow 30 minutes per day. That's about 10 minutes more than required to navagate to your own mail system, log in, and read the messages.

if you're looking for work, 30 minutes a day is not enough. At least that was my experience about 2 years ago when I was looking for work. I had a large pdf document that took about 2 hours on dial-up to load each time I wanted to look at it at home - it contained my search plan and other resources I'd been provided. Going through daily leads at monster and workopolis easily took an hour+ a day. Sometimes there were companies' videos to watch before completing an application process - or determining if my resume needed to be altered to suit what the video told me about the company. I also needed to stay up-to-date on changes in the industry - new legal decisions, changes in the legislation etc. That stuff is online, and takes time to go through.

Luckily, I had access to a resource that gave me the computer time I needed to quickly and successfully get into the right job. Couldn't have done that at home on my dial-up access or with 30 minutes a day in a library.

@ehBeth,
I may be off of a landline and internet soon, as I whined on a thread, when I was trying to figure alternatives. Library far-ish, place with free wifi far-ish for me, plus I'd have to buy an I phone. But maybe a used one or obsolete one..

At present, I got quest to come down in money, but it might not be enough in the denouement. Roger pays a little less than I do, but not that much less. I'd probably stroke with dial up (thinking of Dlowan and her download punishment now), and then get used to it... but the differential doesn't matter in the bigger picture.

I can quickly place myself, with an I phone and virtually no apps, in walmart with my food stamps.

I know Phoenix and like her a lot, and I cringe along with ehBeth.

I'm - and others are, I think - on a2k, reluctant to share any kind of desperation, as really good people work themselves out of it with gamely effort.

Trying hard your whole life doesn't always get you the teddy bear.

Yes and yes.
I was thinking that, but you put it more clearly.

People on the dole ought to be treated as lesser beings? That's the inference I get from a few posters. Some comments on here remind me of an incident when I was perhaps seven years old. A man volunteered to give brother Sam and I free haircuts in the home. Sam was first. He immediately found a mirror as I sat for mine. "I like my haircut," he babbled. "I hope I like mine, too," I replied. Then we were both chewed out by the barber, who said,in essence, 'It's free; you have no right to express an opinion regarding quality of same.'

@ossobuco,
At 250,000, I'd still be by the Petroglyphs, a no free wifi zone. This is the one part of Albuquerque said to be widely expanding.

With many cities, it is now the suburbs that are troubled.

Cool...that'd mean you had to have a finger sensor on to measure when you get excited...imaging how much the ad industry could use that info! They could even wire it so you got an electric shock if you had fun!!!!

Though it's be a bummer if you get intellectually excited when you learn new serious stuff.

@ossobuco,
I'd not go with an iPhone hon...the size of the screen would drive you mad.

I'd do what I am doing and paying an iPad off slowly......you can use both wi fi and 3G on it. Of course it'll be obsolete by the middle of next year when I have paid for it (one of those so-called "no-interest" loans)...or I bet there'll be cheap second hand ones because the next generation is either out or coming.

Mind you the 3G COSTS for it here (though I bet I could get a way better deal)

@dlowan,
Thanks, I'm going to listen to your advice, bun. I have trouble enough with page numbers in some books and blowing those up would only give me giant page numbers to some exclusion of the page.

I need to find about 3G, it's presence re hereabouts, and the costs.

So, do you have an a2k app? Losing a2k would be a knife in the heart (fbaezer will now show up to call me drama queen).

(I'm an Fb fan, and of course he is right)

@ossobuco,
You'll have it...mobile phones use it...you get a sim card for your iPad.

You don't need an app for a2k...you can just have a shortcut on your ipad if you want.

Check out the cost from a number of providers...seriously...maybe someone from your area on A2k has an iPad and can advise?

osso, read this
http://www.examiner.com/web-2-0-in-albuquerque/free-wireless-internet-access-albuquerque
The city of Albuquerque has everywhere free wifi stations (there is a map in there too) where you can hook up for free.

ohhh yes maaaaaam.

I would hope to GOD that someone would not just 'assume' that because i was lower income all I wanted to do with myself was sit in front of a computer diddling my crotch and reading facebook.
And even if I DID want to spend some time doing that in my life, why is it anyone elses business?
Oh yeah. thats right, because I make less than someone else. There for what I would be given access too, even if I had to pay for it, should be only given out like a piece of candy after dinner.

yes , there will be people who abuse the system. Why? because there are thousands using a system. SO WHAT.
If using free internet for porn is all the bad that would come out of it so be it.
If people worry ONLY about porn use on the internet, they have never had to rely on it nor do they really grasp the extent of how much you can learn.

I have fixed my car because of videos and people I have found on the internet.

I have filed and taken care of small legal issues... all thanks to internet.

I find jobs with out leaving my house

I educate myself on anything I need... all by internet.

My daughter and I work through her homework by internet

I learn to cook , budget and market myself... allll by internet.

If you are proficient in internet use, which is very simple, you almost do not need anything else.

The internet is not an item owned by someone else to be divided up and handed out like pie slices. The actual COST of having someone use the internet with out paying is FRACTIONS of a penny per person. This isnt a money issue, this is a control issue and a control issue passed on to those who can not exercise any themselves due to their place in society.
I being one of those people am appalled by the judgment and criticism I hear from people about " the less fortunate". As if only the balance of your bank account will dictate how well you use a tool like the internet. Tell that to the rich child molesters who can read PDF's on HOW TO abuse kids and get away with it..
Or corrupt CEO's who brief themselves on certain laws so they know how to avoid charges when they launder your money
Or the snakey used car sales man who briefs himself on basic psychology and manipulation so that he can take full advantage of the elderly people who show up to pad his OWN pocket..
Or drug dealers who use the internet to find out how to make their own smack

no.
Stupid internet use is not limited to poor

And if you want free internet, take your computer to ( to name a few places)
McDonalds
Starbucks
Barnes and Nobel
Wing Stop
A few KFC's
Libraries
The airport
Most city buses ( austin)
The parking lot of apt complexes that offer free wiifi
Hotel lobbies
Upscale department stores

or hell , just park near a high rise. Someone , some where , will have an unsecured network.
Free wifi is NOT hard to come by.

@CalamityJane,
I did, it's the library, guessing two miles from me. I'm a reluctant driver.
Much of the year it is wildly hot here, and sometimes cold, re walking. I could game up but you'll probably read me as grease on the highway. The bus runs twice a day, something like 6 am and pm, stop being many blocks away from me. Being night blind, those are bad times for me much of the year, if only re caution.
I have yet to take that bus.

I know, I'm whining, but I figure my difficulties - or similar, but different - are common.

The internet is freedom.

@shewolfnm,
Your rant - that I like - is off to this extent -
Those places you list are not near me, Shewolf.
Certainly no high rise.
Butrflynet gave me a couple of clues but they are quite long walks.
I used to jog four miles but I don't do it now.
