Golden Globes 2011: The Hollywood Foreign Press Strikes Back!

Reply Tue 14 Dec, 2010 06:23 pm
So the HFPA (the weirdly secretive and oddly named Hollywood Foreign Press Association) has rolled out another set of films for their annual tribute to cinema.
Do you agree with their line up this year? Who do you think gives out the most legitimate awards during the movie award season? The Oscars? The Golden Globes? The IFC Spirit Awards? Someone else?

ANY CRIMINAL OMISSIONS? THIS YEAR??

What I like about the GGs is that they split comedy and drama. So few comedies or comedic performances are nominated for Oscars, and it's really a shame because a good comedy is as visceral and important a performance as a good drama, IMHO.

That being said, though, the GGs seem to be less about the art and more about who's hot (not in terms of looks, but in terms of who's popular and working and looks like they're going to continue to work for the nonce). That's my impression. The Academy Awards seem to be a bit more about the art although there is an enormous amount of horse-trading.

Dunno enough about the Spirit Awards to say one way or the other.

@jespah,
The Spirit Awards are a blip in the movie going scene. They exclude films with a certain budget higher then their budget ceiling (can't seem to find it right now). So the films that qualify tend to really be independent and/or really small budget studio flicks.

Thusly, the great majority of their films tend to only get limited theatrical releases only and never get any exposure outside those in the know.

And great assessment on the Golden Globes. I concur wholeheartedly.
