The lame-duck Congress has a rare opportunity to avoid $25-30 billion in new deficit spending over the next five years, ease consumers’ pain at the pump, and scale back political manipulation of energy markets by literally doing nothing.

At the stroke of midnight on December 31 of this year, the 45¢ per gallon Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit (VEETC), commonly known as the blender’s credit, and the 54¢ per gallon tariff on imported ethanol, will expire.

A bipartisan group of 17 senators, led by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), say it’s time for these special-interest giveaways to go gently into the night. A broad coalition of environmental, taxpayer, hunger, free market, and food industry organizations are urging House and Senate leaders to let the VEETC meet its statutorily appointed fate.

An exciting prospect — for the first time ever, Congress may decide to put the general welfare of consumers and taxpayers ahead of the corporate welfare of the ethanol lobby....

@gungasnake,
So, I'm in the position of agreeing with Feinstein? I never would have guessed.

Ending the subsidy will not be the death of ethanol....this time.

The use of ethanol they way it has been implemented is stupid, we all know this....but the door has been kicked wide open this round with production, transportation and facilities in place like never before.

Besides...it's even more stupid to subsidize something that is already mandatory. In the past eras of ethanol it wasn't mandatory....that's why it isn't going away this time, subsidy or not.

@Brand WTF,
Good point on subsidizing something that is already mandatory.

So they did it anyway....even with Growth Energy, the biggest ethanol lobby of all, being against it.

"Washington, D.C. - Congressional negotiators have agreed to extend the 45-cent-per-gallon subsidy for ethanol for one year and also continue a tariff on imports of the biofuel, said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Ia.

The tariff will continue at 45 cents per gallon through 2011, said Grassley, who announced Thursday evening that the provisions would be included in tax legislation worked out with the White House.

The bill also would resurrect and extend for another year the $1-a-gallon subsidy for biodiesel that expired at the end of 2009"

The Ethanol Idiocy that Will Not Die
Bipartisan common sense is no match for the inertia of a government subsidy.

When Al Gore drops an environmental fad, it has truly reached its expiration date....
