Zecharia Sitchin (July 11, 1920 – October 9, 2010) was an Azeri-born American author of books promoting an explanation for human origins involving ancient astronauts. Sitchin attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Anunnaki, which he claims to be a race of extra-terrestrials from a planet beyond Neptune called Nibiru. He believed this hypothetical planet of Nibiru to be in an elongated, elliptical orbit in the Earth's own Solar System, asserting that Sumerian mythology reflects this view. Sitchin's books have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 20 languages.
Sitchin's theories are not accepted by mainstream scientists and academics who dismiss his work as pseudohistory and pseudoscience. Sitchin's work has been criticised for flawed methodology and mistranslations of ancient texts as well as for his astronomical and scientific claims.

i have to admit, i love this stuff, ever since reading
Chariots of the Gods as a kid
do i believe it, not really, but its at least as plausible as any crazy religious explanation, and at least kind of cool, compared to primordial soup
lunatic or visionary label aside, Sitchin was to the end passionate about his beliefs and will be missed by his followers
