Anomalous East German Flag

I purchased an East German flag in Berlin in 1989. Oddly, the hammer & compass crest is rotated 90 degrees to the right and now aligns vertically with the stripes instead of horizontally. I thought it might be a banner configuration, but have only seen banners with the stripes still displayed horizontally. Is what I have the product of an inept (or rebellious) flag maker, or is this a valid configuration?

@bjudisch,
My son-in-law has a flag like yours. It measures three and a half feet by twelve and a half feet. Have you found out anything about your's?

@tallbob,
I did. It's a banner-style flag to be hung from the side of a building, for example, rather than on a flag pole.
