To Ping or not to Ping? Has anyone else tried or is trying Apple Ping?

Apple has this new feature on iTunes called Ping. Their attempt at an iTune Store fueled social network.

Just out of curiosity, I just turned the option on. So far since I buy most of my MP3 albums from Amazon, I don't think I'll be too compelled to participate unless there's something I'm missing.

The possible concert and album recommendations may or may not hold a potential draw but I'll hold in a cynical sigh until I will most likely be underwhelmed by the inevitable mediocrity of the whole social program.

So far, I've started to follow Yo Yo Ma and Kronos Quartet. I will be sparing and hold stringent guidelines on which artists I will follow in order to determine how long I will use this new social network if I use it at all.

@tsarstepan,
Got this German email regarding my Ping account:
Quote:

I could translate it with babelfish but I'll leave it here for you guys to decipher.

I believe it's a request to follow me though I can't imagine how or why I'd be picked out of the blue by a complete stranger since I have barely done anything with my Ping account.

@tsarstepan,
Where did you click?

@dlowan,
In iTunes itself:

It will then open up your iTunes account in your browser and you have to click through the usual user agreement legal mumbo jumbo stuff.

But I wonder if it's available outside the US and Europe.

What Is Ping? Apple’s Social Network For Music

By Matt Buchanan on September 2, 2010 at 3:43 AM
Ping is Apple’s music social network that lives inside of iTunes—it’s all about music discovery. Like Twitter, you can follow and be followed—your friends to see what they’re listening to, or artists like Lady Gaga.

@tsarstepan,
Er, yes...I got that.

I meant what was your answer?

Mind you, I CAN'T find where to click to complete a download!

And yes, it's available here. Worldwide, I imagine.

@dlowan,
I didn't reply to the email or go to my Ping account to acknowledge the request until I find out this isn't a spam attempt at following me.

Depressingly notable is that over half of my Twitter followers are unknown individuals and/or groups that are most likely the most inefficient forms of spamming out there because they are too easy to ignore as I don't follow them once I read what their description dictates.

@tsarstepan,
Just went to my Ping account and his request seems fair and is actually in English. The automated email was in German because his iTunes account must be from the German server.

At least it's musically genre relevant according to the couple to classical music suggestions I have already entered with Ping.

I'm taking a rare chance and decided to approve his request and reciprocated by following him as well.
