What is the fundamental reason why America is caught up in so much turmoil in the Middle East? What is at the heart of this crisis? Who and/or what do we blame? How do we solve this problem?

I think the fundamental reason why we are at war has to do with human rights especially the rights of women. American has gone though most of its sexual revolution but the world is still catching up. As we can still see some sexist clubs and attitudes lingering in America the problem is much more deeply rooted in the Middle East and their religions.

The religions really don't matter. We didn't invade Afghanistan and Iraq because of their religions. The greatest factor behind the turmoil is economics, the control of resources, land and territory included.

One of the reasons things have been bad there was the discovery of oil, and the West's desire to control it.

At the end of WWI the winning Western powers wrested control of the region from Turkey which was on the losing side, and proceeded to carve up the region into poorly thought out national boundaries. The British were the worst incompetents in this regard (although the French weren’t far behind in this distinction), ignoring cultural, ethnic and religious differences within the populations that they drew together as they created these nations. This almost guaranteed instability within these nations that they created.

They left the Kurds without an independent nation, dividing them among four countries that they created; and bound the Shi’ite Arabs and the Kurds of southeastern Kurdistan under the control of the Sunni Arabs in Iraq.

In Iran the British, with the collusion of the US, overthrew the Iranian government and installed a dictator, the Shah of Iran. The people rose against the Shah, and forced him into exile. During the resultant power vacuum, Islamists under Ayatollah Khomeini took control of the country and established an Islamic regime there.

Judging by the longest lasting conflict in that region, the worst travesty perpetrated by the British was to abet the Zionists in the creation of an ethnocentric state for "the Jewish people" in Palestine, at the expense of the Palestinian peoples there. The conflict between the Zionists and Palestinians is the crux of the turmoil in the Middle East that America is caught up in, and has yet to be resolved.

This makes no sense.

If you were right, then the US would be at war with the worst human rights offenders and would only be allies with countries that respect human rights.

Let's look at facts.

Among the worst countries for civil rights (rated by pretty much everyone as worse then Iran or Pakistan) are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. All of these are about 90% Christian. The United States has no military involvement in any of these countries. We also aren't at war with Myanmar or Albania, both of which have serious problems with human rights and particularly women's rights.

Saudi Arabia is famous for not giving rights to women. Yet, the United States considers them an ally. China and the United States work together on many issues with only an occasion wrist slap for human rights issues. You don't have to go back very far to see US support for violent dictators who did barbaric things to their own citizens.

Your theory says far more about your personal prejudice then about anything else.

@Fil Albuquerque,
I don't think they went to war over oil. It would be a bad investment, because how much money has been spent on this war so far? Does not seem to be worth it.

Another trip through Rex's bizzaro fanatsy world. An organization known as Al Qaeda, operating out of Afghanistan, took credit for a murderous attack on the United States. The government of the United States demanded that the then government of Afghanistan, the Taliban under the psychotic Mullah Omar, turn over the members of Al Qaeda to the United States--this demand was delivered in the form of an ultimatum. The Taliban refused. So we invaded Afghanistan.

Any other claims are bullshit.

@Setanta,
You are old enough to know that before the USA illegally invades a country, they concoct a lie or a set of lies, usually of the flimsiest sort, but enough to dupe the citizenry.

Quote:
Bush rejects Taliban offer to hand Bin Laden over

President George Bush rejected as "non-negotiable" an offer by the Taliban to discuss turning over Osama bin Laden if the United States ended the bombing in Afghanistan.

Returning to the White House after a weekend at Camp David, the president said the bombing would not stop, unless the ruling Taliban "turn [bin Laden] over, turn his cohorts over, turn any hostages they hold over." He added, "There's no need to discuss innocence or guilt. We know he's guilty". In Jalalabad, deputy prime minister Haji Abdul Kabir - the third most powerful figure in the ruling Taliban regime - told reporters that the Taliban would require evidence that Bin Laden was behind the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, but added: "we would be ready to hand him over to a third country".

Why on earth would anyone want to seek a diplomatic solution when there is yet another chance to bomb the **** out of innocent men, women and children, when there is yet another chance to direct more profits to the US armament industry? It's all about moving inventory.

Their motives were explicitly stated:
The presence of the U.S. in Saudi Arabia,
the support of Israel by the U.S.,
and the sanctions against Iraq.

That can't be true, InfraB.

GW Bush said it's because they hate our freedoms. That must have been the real reason because most Americans, quite the discerning lot, think so too.

I wonder why we haven't heard this from Pres Obama.

That is a no-brainer, Rex. Long prison terms for all those who took part in these two illegal invasions would put a stop to these kinds of reckless, inhumane actions.
