I've heard that "6) Kingdom of Loathing" is good, but expect to tire of it in short order.

Not browser based, but it is free and I heard it was kind of enjoyable.

Be careful. A lot of browser games, especially the RPGs, are "free." Which means that the only artifacts and companions you can find are crap, and if you want anything good, you have to haul out your credit card.
You might be better off to find a good game for which you pay a nominal fee, and which doesn't spend a lot of your online time trying to sell you stuff.
