Have any of you tried this game out?
If so, what do you think of it?

Thank you!

@mark noble,
I consider myself a somewhat of a sophisticated gamer but this deluge of ads from Evony seem so cheesy.

It looks like a mix of Second Life without the first person perspective aka a lot of soft core porn and gambling. But then again that's just information gathered by their own marketing campaign.

It's apparently one of those allegedly free games that you have to pump in real money and time to succeed. I disdain that kind of mindless gaming.

Plus strategy games seem dedicated to far too much work and far less time for plot and play.

I'm not against open ended style games as I have often played Sims for hundreds of hours on end.

My advice? Stay away from this garbage/time waster.

@tsarstepan,
It's completely free Tsar.
With 18 million players on 145 servers.

@mark noble,
You can purchase certain aspects of the game like in Farmville in order to gain advantage on other players and succeed at a faster rate if one played the free version (without the purchases).

Game review:

Special Items & Medals

Evony use the microtransaction business model to make money, so there are many items you can buy, for real money, that will help you along in the game. Items can range from things that subtract from build times, ranging from 15 min to 8 hrs to 30% reduction in build times. Other items will boost production or combat effectiveness for a certain amount of time. There are also medals that you gain from conquering land, these medals can be used to either boost your hero stats or to promote yourself via Promotion Quests.

User comment to above game review:
Quote:
To actually compete in the game though usually requires the purchase of in game cents to the tune of ten cents per US dollar. Which most given items in game costing anwhere from 3 cents to several hundred cents it doesn’t take long to tank your pocketbook in this money sink. Not all items available in game are available withough the purchase of cents creating further presure to spend into a game not worth the expense.

Has Evony become the most despised game on the web?

Players are encouraged to buy in-game extras to speed their progress – but the confusing way the game prices its add-ons means that many users may not realise that a simple action, such as sending a message to another player, can cost 15p a time.

A damning article from a legitimate news source:

@tsarstepan,
I agree about the cheese-factor. Plus, as a female who like RPGs, the cleavage was a big turn-off for me.

EDIT: actually looking at the ad at the bottom of this page, maybe I have the wrong game? Or did they change their tactic? If I do indeed have the wrong game, then... what Tsar said.

I don't see any ads, have them blocked while using Firefox.

That being said, I would never click on an ad to try something out. Too many nefarious things going on with ads these days. I'd do some research for reviews and then go directly to the game site to access it.

On Evony, after reading some reviews, it doesn't sound like anything that would much interest me. After being a game-master for several years and seeing/building the behind-the-scene workings of multiple online RPGs, it takes a lot to get me excited about a multi-user online game these days. Most of them are just reconfigured copies of each other and the storylines aren't very original.

@littlek,
They have a two pronged ad campaign. The other campaign is the one you're seeing. The one that associates their game mostly towards Civilization (Sid Meier's legendary strategy game) fans.

@tsarstepan,
I play the game tsar. It is free.
Only fools spend real money there, but that is what keeps it free, so I don't blame them.

I am one of the higher ranked players on two servers and I've never spent a penny. There are no charges for messaging or any of the other features.

Just wondering if anyone here had given it a go.

How do I block the adverts, please?

@mark noble,
If you use the Firefox browser then try the reliable extension, Adblock Plus, a free and reliable open source extension that blocks most if not all adds on almost every webpage.

A more unique experience is Add-Art which uses Addblock Plus but instead of blocking the advertisements it replaces the banners with a monthly online curated exhibit of art works. I tried it for awhile but since ads don't bother me and I use Google Chrome I use neither extension. Not sure if either extension has been fitted to Chrome anyway.

@tsarstepan,
Thank you Tsar, but I find firefox a bit crap. I'll bear the ads, I guess.
