Label the following descriptions as either: compatibilist, hard determinist, or libertarian.

1. Theophilus believes that the actions we take are determined by psychological facts about us – for example, our attitudes, likes and dislikes, past experiences, et cetera. Nevertheless, if we had had different desires and attitudes, we could have chosen to do something other than we chose. Thus, our choices are free, and we have free will.

2. Rocky believes that our present decisions are not determined by the events in our past, and yet they are not random either. They are caused directly by human agency; and it is the human agent that has a radical form of freedom and responsibility.

3. Calvin believes that everything has been created by God, who fully knew and foresaw the actions of moral agents from the beginning. He believes that you cannot avoid your destiny (be it heaven or hell), since all your choices have been foreseen by God. Nevertheless, you have moral responsibility, since your actions are, after all, your actions and no one else’s.
4. Smininky believes that everything happens according to the dictates of the physical laws of nature, including his own decisions. We have the illusion of freedom, but actually we are just the slaves of the atoms in our brains.
