15 shaban just passed. i've heard that it has no significance in islam. but in mosques and in our famlies, we offer extra prayers and keep fasts. is it a biddat?

I can't answer your question directly, but maybe the above links will help. Though I do find it humorous that fundamental religions of different stripes fight against syncretism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syncretism Christmas, Easter, Halloween, are all excellent examples in Christianity (as is Santeria).

Maybe it would help for you to pray about this. Many people tell me that their god responds to their questions through prayer, and when the answer is "yes" a peace about the topic comes to them.
