Often, when we talk about lyrics that are meaningful to us we write out the whole song when it is really just a few lines of the song that speak to us.
I challenge you to distill the meaningfull song down to it's essential five lines (or less) and tell us what it signifies in your life.
I'll go first with one, (though there are many):
"Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you"
-- Neil Young "Old Man"
These two lines really express my life during my 20s.
Now, your turn.
I'll add more later after I've had a chance to distill a bit.
It's the heart , afraid of breaking , that never learns to dance .
It's the dream , afraid of waking , that never takes a chance .
It's the one who won't be taken , who cannot seem to give .
And the soul , afraid of dyin' , that never learns to live
Bette Midler- "The Rose"
"All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am"
Narrowing it down is important there, as the next line is "all I'll ever be".
I think this is very telling.
I believe I understand Phoenix's based on what I know about her. Craven's really has me intreigued; I don't think I know enough to really understand.
My 40s might best be summed up by:
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round.
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
--John Lennon
I'm still working on my other decades.....
your lovin me so easy
your wish is my command
so just hold me close and love me
tell me its won't end
umm, umm, umm, feels so right
This song causes me to take a trip down memory lane..back to when things were really good.
Hmmm. Shiver. That is interesting.
I think this one might be my 30s:
Loved ones, loved ones visit the building
Take the highway, park and come up and see me
I'll be working, working but if you come visit
I'll put down what I'm doing, my friends are important
-- Talking Heads (Don't worry about the government)
I've always enjoyed lyrics with a deep, honest meaning.
My all time favorite lyric:
'Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him'
-- Jeff Buckley 'Lover You Shoul've Come Over'
Other one's I like:
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
-- Bob Marley 'The Redemption Song'
666 is no longer alone,
He's getting out the marrow in your back bone,
And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll,
Gonna blow right down inside your soul.
Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon,
In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune.
-- Peter Gabriel with Genesis 'Supper's Ready'
There's somethin' wrong with the world today
I don't know what it is
Something's wrong with our eyes
We're seeing things in a different way
And God knows it ain't His
It sure ain't no surprise
-- Steven Tyler of Aerosmith 'Living on the Edge'
If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through this tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
I'm gonna wait it out
If there were no desire to heal
The damaged and broken met along this tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
-- Maynard Keenan of Tool 'The Patient'
Words you say,
Never seem to live up to the ones inside your head.
The lives we make,
Never seem to ever get us anywhere but dead.
Soundgarden - The day I tried to live.
Depressing I know.
lifehouse
"and how can i stand here with you and not be moved by you?
would you tell me how can it be any better than this?
cause you're all i want all i need
everything everything"
this song really speaks to me because well first of all it's about the presence of God. it's like how can i stand in the presence of God and not feel anything? it's like. God is so awesome that it's impossible to not feel when he's right there with you. it can't possibly be any better than that because he's all i want all i need. everything.
Burned all my notebooks
what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
That was good for Law School and it works again, now that I'm back in school (not for law, for DBA). :-D
"Damn that television...What a bad picture"!
"Don't get upset...it's not a major disaster"
-Found a Job -Talking Heads
"I am me as you are me as you are we and we are all together"
(:3= -Beatles
But you won't talk, won't look, won't think of me
I'm the epitome of public enemy
Why you wanna go and do me like that
Come down on the street and dance with me
I'm a lot like you so please, hello, I'm here, I'm waiting
I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me
Six lines, I know. Oh well. It's by Weezer. It's just a very emo song.
If I were your appendages
I'd hold open your eyes
To see that we are all heaven sent
and there one not ment ot be just one
Incubus-Meglomaniac
Just shows how some people can be closed minded
Wow.
Life's been disasterous and I've been negligent.
These are some interesting contributions.
Thank you all.
I took a wrong turn on the astral plane
and I keep on thinkin' my luck is gonna change
someday
bad karma
it's uphill all the way
etc. etc. "Bad Karma" - Warren Zevon
I knew what she had to do and made herself this solemn vow
I's gonna be a lady someday though I didn't know when or how
But I couldn't see spendin the rest of my life with my hung down in shame
I might've been born just plain white trash
But Fancy was my name
My teen years:
"Do you think that I creep in the night
and sleep in a phone booth?"
Frank Zappa
My 20s:
"Get up! Stand up!
Stand up for your rights!"
Bob Marley
My 30s:
"Ti voglio bene assai,
ma tanto tanto bene sai,
e 'na catena ormai,
che scioglie il sangue deinde vene, sai"
Lucio Dalla
(I love you so much,
but so much, you know,
that it's a chain now and forever
that melts the blood from inside the veins, you know)
Some bad moments last year:
"The child is grown,
the dream is gone
and I've become confortably numb"
Pink Floyd
"Non รจ che mi manca la forza
ne mi manca il coraggio,
ma ormai son dentro
quest' ingranaggio"
Giorgio Gaber
(It's not that I lack the strength or that I lack the courage, but now and forever I'm inside this clockwork)
