How I became a Christian

A lot of people have different ideas about what Christianity is and many of those who profess to be Christians hold beliefs that contradict each other. The purpose of this post is to try to explain Christianity by describing the process by which I became a Christian.

I grew up believing that the Bible was true but I didn't get much teaching about what it taught. I learned enough from my reading to realize that I didn't completely live up to the standards that God required and I was in danger of being condemned to hell for my sins. I tried hard to make up for my past sins by living as I should and I got baptized and joined a church because I hoped that would help me earn my salvation.

Unfortunately the church I joined was liberal in its theology and didn't always follow the Bible so I never realized that what I believed was wrong. When I was in high school my Sunday school teach recommended that I listen to a radio program called Back to the Bible. I did so and for the first time I learned what the Bible really teaches about salvation.

I had thought that I could make up for my past sins by doing good works but I learned that that was impossible and I couldn't possibly do enough to earn salvation. But I also learned that the reason Jesus died was to pay the penalty that I deserved for my sins. His resurrection is the evidence that God accepted that sacrifice and my sins could be forgiven. I already believed that Jesus was crucified and rose again from death but I had never understood the reason for it. But merely believing these facts wasn't enough for salvation. I had to recognize that Jesus took the punishment that I deserved and I had to choose to believe in him as my savior in order to be forgiven.

Before I learned the way of salvation I thought I was a Christian. I was trying to live a Christian life when in fact I was spiritually dead and didn't have life. It was only when I put my faith in Christ and was forgiven that I really became a Christian.

I still listen regularly to the Back to the Bible program and I recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the Bible better. Their web site is

They produce programs in many countries in many languages. Here is their site for these programs

@theophilus cv,
You could of just read the bible and took to hart what it said rather then letting others tell you what to believe. Also, it's my experiences that 'liberal' churches are closer to true christianity then most others (though if they weren't teaching the crucifixion, you have a point).

As a quick disclaimer, I speak as a former Christian.

@David cv,
Jesus Christ possesses all Powers of Ekadesha Rudras, that is, eleven Powers of Destruction. These Powers have their centres located around the cranium of our head. When the Incarnation of Kalki takes place, all these eleven Powers perform the work of Destruction. Out of these eleven Powers one is that of Shri Hanumana, the other of Shri Bhairava. In the Bible, these two Powers are named as Saint Gabriel and Saint Michael respectively. After Self-Realization in Sahaja Yoga one can awaken these Powers by addressing them in Sanskrit, Marathi or even in English. . . .

The aforesaid matters can be verified by any person after Self-Realization in Sahaja Yoga. The purpose why I am telling you all this is to impress upon you that it is absurd to quarrel against yourselves after groupings as Hindus or Muslims or Christians. If you could see the principle behind all this, you would realize that all these saints are like many flowers on the same Tree of Religion, and are all connected with each other because of the One and the same Power

I agree with David. This quote is a contradiction.

Jesus was about compassion. He broke the law to help people. He was criticized for hanging out with the wrong crowd. When Jesus left, his followers set up a socialist society where everyone sold their belongings to give to the poor.

There are hundreds of passages in the Bible, from "loving your neighbor" to "showing mercy" to "turn the other cheek", that you have to ignore to be a conservative.

It is amazing how delusional some people are.
