Difference between Sunni and Shia Islam

When Mohammad died Islam split over the issue of who should should lead the religion, Mohammad's closest bloodline('Ali) or his Greatest successors (4 caliphs).

Do you know much about their theology, and why they hate each other. Maybe not hate, but why they kill each other.

To my understanding the Shi'ites believe that 'Ali has rightful successor-ship and all of Mohammad's bloodline has divine Revelation and a direct connection with god while the Sunnis believe that Mohammad was the last person with a direct connection to god and only he had direct revelation from god. Sunnis make decisions based on more of a consensus while shi'ites believe in following the words of Mohammad's descendants.
