Contrite And Blond And Totally Baffled, All The Way To The Bank
Mark Morford
Reviews have been mixed and the facts are in serious question, but the authorized biography of Pfc. Jessica Lynch will still claim a cherished position in the publishing industry: No. 1 on The New York Times' list of nonfiction best sellers.
"Clearly, people are responding to her story," sighed Paul Bogaards, director of publicity at Alfred A. Knopf. "Either that or they are just incredibly drunk and gullible and found the dumb thing at Costco for $8.99 and thought it would make a nice gift for their neoconservative Republican perpetually angry gun-nut stepfather who's still in rehab and who should have the restraining order lifted any day now," he should've added.
"Wait, did we make a very similar joke last Wednesday? Damn. But it wasn't an official NYT best seller then. Now it's even *more* depressing. See? Get it? OK. Sorry. My work here is done."
