@kickycan,
My dad turned 70 in March. My mother emailed everyone she knew and told them to mail letters to my father. He got dozens and dozens of letters from friends old and new as well as family members. We, his kids, each wrote a piece for him. This idea came from my b-in-l's father. He'd asked that everyone write a eulogy for him so he could actually enjoy it (as opposed to them saying nice things after he was dead).

@littlek,
That's a nice idea! (Maybe leave the eulogy part out of it.)

I know where you can get him a book made for super cheap where you can add the photos, AND your own captions for under 30.00 for a gift.

Tshirts and calendars, things like that, can be made cheaply at cafepress.
You can even make personal bumper stickers.

@kickycan,
I love the tee shirt idea. It could be really funny. I can see all the kids wearing one ...maybe all the same "Dad loves me best" or , "Dad's favourite" something like that. A funny one just for your mom and maybe a few others for friends, grandkids (grandpa's princess) or some such along the same theme.

Hokey? You bet! Hilarious. Fun! Wish I'd thought of it for my mom's 80th.

Everybody wearing "Damn, You're 70?!" "Where's the scotch?!" or some variation sounds great to me.

Have a blast kicky.

You could put Latin motto on something.

e.g.

Domus mea, regulae meae

(My house, my rules)

A new year a new 70th birthday! My mother is turning 70 this year (last year it was Dad). I will suggest the t-shirt idea to my siblings.

Any other ideas?

@kickycan,
If you have pictures from his entire life, you could digitize them then use one of those photo sites like Shutterfly.com to make a life stretching picture album.

@kickycan,
A fun thing might be making it a costume party dressing in clothes popularized during the era he was born... The slides or PowerPoint of hairstyles across dad's life sounds awesome. A story about where he was during pivotal moments in history might be worked into something either sentimental or funny. Or both.

Napkins can be printed Bob: STILL ALIVE

or something. Film it. I think this is the sweetest idea ever - How lucky your dad is.

@kickycan,
The t-shirt idea sounds fun! Do you have a friend who's into photography? It would be nice if all the male generation in your family could have a portrait. From youngest to the oldest and label it with something like "This is how I would look like a couple of years from now". That could serve as a party favor, too!
