I went on a ramble with hamburger one day. We lucked into a four-hour sale - 80% off lowest marked price. I got Enzo Angiolini shoes - reduced from $120 to $9.00. hamburger held a spot in line for me - the cashier agreed to keep the sale going til I got there.
Oh yes!!! Sale is my middle name. I do all my Christmas shopping in the summer and I buy nothing unless it's on sale.
I love sales. And BigDice loves them even more. Sometimes I think that's why he likes to go to the US on vacation. There is always some kind of sale - a lot more than in Germany. Can't wait for the next vacation!
And outlets - outlets are great. During our first vacation to the States, we hit every designer outlet between Atlanta and Daytona.
Sales are great, of course. There's nothing like getting quality merchandise at a low price.
I like the grocery store deals with the cost-cutting cards. You stand there at the register, they add up all of the groceries and then swipe your card and you watch as the register tallies the discounts and your total is comsiderably less than before. I know that the store is probably making it up some other way but I don't care. I love watching that register roll backwards
I am way too undisciplined to wait for sales, generally.
There are some fabulous ones here - and for items like white goods, cookware, small electricals etc, I DO tend to wait for them - since half-price or less is very attractive.
I have a trick for them - the only store where I have a store-card will match any price anywhere, so I decide what I want, from their range - check out the normal price, wait until someone has a major discount on the items, and buy via the store where I have the card. This adds at least a year to all warranties.
Occasionally, through good luck, not planning, I see a garment I love, but cannot afford, keep checking, and get it for half-price in the end - normally no such discipline occurs.
I normally wait for sales for manchester.
I DO agree with Craven about lots of shonkier places that have perpetual "sales" - but he is, of course, quite wrong about reputable outlets.
Piffka wrote: Fishin' -- Good going. I wish Mr.P would do a little more checking around when he goes shopping. He tends to have an "I want it now, I'll buy it now." attitude. But he is happy to indulge me in my search for a bargain.
Well, on the other side of this I also tend to waffle on buying things al lot. I'll look for months waiting for a better deal to come around.
I really liked a certian HDTV and had my eye on it for several months thinking the price would go down to a level I could accept. Unfortunately, the manufacturer discontinued it and it's no longer available so I'm out of luck on that one. I had to seek out a new model to put a "watch" on. lol
On the items which I buy regularly, you know a specific brand (Old Navy & VS) I really will only buy when there is a sale but, I check in here and there to see what kind of sales are happening.
On bigger purchase items I find what Im looking for and find the best price on it or try to find the best opportunity for similar.
I have my moments of just buying what I want when I want it but, those are few and far between and usually are really more necessity driven than impulse. I allow myself impulse but, not to a great extent.
I hate to shop. Hate it, hate it, hate it. I would rather scrub floors than try on clothes.
I go all autistic when I shop - sensory overload. When Gap quit making my favorite jeans it was nearly a catastrophe.
I almost always wear Converse sneakers - I buy a dozen pair at a time. I shop on a mission: I need this and that; get in, get out. If its on sale I feel lucky but I won't make a special trip for a sale.
I would probably do all of my shopping on line but I always hesitate to buy anything I can't touch.
I do, however, love bookstores, fabric stores and grocery stores. I can kill a couple of hours in any of those.
Don't be so quick to categorize us, fishin'. My husband is the one who can't walk into Wal-Mart without spending $100, not me.
OH! I beg to differ, fishin. I've known several guys who will buy something JUST BECAUSE it's on sale, not because they need it.
Hahaha, eoe! My husband once bought a trolling motor for 50% off when a sporting goods store was going out of business.
And we didn't own a boat!
I always hold my breath when hubby goes to the store cause there's no telling what he'll come back with, and whether we'll have room for it or not. Cause it was ON SALE.
Fabric stores?
(Just interested... doesn't seem to fit with the rest.)
What can I say? I'm mad for textiles. There are really some astonishingly beautiful fabrics. I get great ideas about color and pattern when browsing.
Eva- I once wanted to buy 2 kayaks, so that we could use them for exercise. Somehow, because of my husband, the 2 kayaks turned into a small fishing boat with a trolling motor. We found that the trolling motor was inadequate, so we bought a regular motor.
The long and short of it all is that we used the damned thing THREE TIMES. It was a pain in the neck to handle, and we ended up selling it. For awhile, it did double duty as an extra closet in our garage.
Also, I have to keep my husband out of the video stores. He simply cannot control himself!
That's true. I love it too. I guess it's a simplified version of clothes shopping... can focus on the fabric itself rather than cut, style, etc.
I take male photographers in there when we need fabrics for photo backgrounds. They always want to buy too much.
Sale is my middle name, but I am very careful about what is on sale and what the regular retail price used to be. 75% off can be wonderful or simply a good sucker ad. If it has been marked up 100% over the retail price, then marked down 75%, it puts proof to that old saying, "There's a sucker born every minute."
Thrift and consignment stores are my favorites. They have a unique selection and quality clothing at excellent prices. I have also found kitchen items and linens I normally wouldn't buy becasuse of their traditionally high prices. I've become a thrift store maven.
