There are abundant ads claiming that citizens can do their income tax on line free of charge. Only those on the lowest of income levels may file for free.

@plainoldme,
ha, i always wondered about that

i buy a tax program every year, for about $14 bucks (actually my mom buys it as i do her taxes, mine are pretty simple), well worth the price, i always got more money back than i asked for when i did my taxes by hand, and a few times i've checked the diference between me doing it and the program, and i've always got better returns with the program

@plainoldme,
Have you checked the free tax software on the IRS website? They are not just for the very lowest income levels. One I just looked at, on that site, is free if your adjusted gross income is less than $57,000. Others might have different limits.

@djjd62,
Do you mean software? Do you go to a computer peripherals store?

@firefly,
I did a couple of years ago and found none that were free. I used Turbo Tax that year but I thought for a person to who earns less than $20,000 to spend $30 on income tax preparation was outrageous. I haven't checked since.
