While I worship Richard Thompson . . . and this question was asked previously and several people asked who RT is . . . I would say that there is no "best" guitarist. For one thing, there are too many styles in which to play. A person might be dynamite playing classical music but a flop at the blues and vice versa.
I'm a big Jeff Beck fan, but for my money, Steve Morse has got the goods.

Steve Morse the Boston Globe's legendary rock critic? Didn't know he played.
For blues, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Hubert Sumlin (Howlin'Wolf's guy).
Chris Smither's a hot folkie, POM's Richard Thompson, yes, folk-rock. Django Reinhardt was by no means a beginner on the guitar, and he only had something like five or six operating fingers counting both hands.
