My bet is that before long wi-fi will be everywhere and we will no longer have to pay a "cell" phone bill. Instead, we will have to pay a "wi-fi" bill and cell phones will be designed to connect using the web.
Eventually, I think all televisions and radios will also use the wi-fi for reception.
I think wi-fi is too short range to work everywhere.

yeah, but that's probably cellphone tower based, rather than wifi.

It won't be Wi-Fi that does the connection (too short range), but your basic premise is correct.
Eventually we will pay for a single wireless data connection and everything will flow through it.
Just an update.... The FCC recently approved what they call "Super WiFi".
It's getting closer to reality!
