Where Are All The Guitar Heroines?

Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists published in 2003 included just two female guitarists: Joan Jett and Joni Mitchell...and there was hardly an outcry. In other arts women have achieved parity. What's going on?

@panzade,
They're missing at least two of my favourites - Liona Boyd and Sue Foley. Different genres, but both extraordinary musicians.

Actually there are quite a number of superb female guitarists in the world of blues (Bonnie Raitt, anyone?), but I don't think that'd fall into Rolling Stones' world view.

@ehBeth,
They're looking for rock guitar heroes...guitarists that pioneered a new style.
Bonnie Raitt is one that comes to mind....but is it something inherent in the posing and alpha attitude?

@panzade,
hahahahahaha

pioneered a new style

there are maybe (really, truly) 10 or 12 of those

the rest are filler

there's nothing new out there - almost everything you can find in rock was found elsewhere first

@ehBeth,
true true

so the phallic image of a guitar pointed up towards the audience doesn't enter the equation?

@panzade,
I don't know much about guitarists but I liked that girl with the big crazy blonde hair who played with Michael Jackson on his last tour . (not the one from the This is It film).

Don't know her name.

@Dorothy Parker,
If you mean Orianthi Panagaris from Australia, you're right; she's a guitar goddess. Like Carlos said: She can play Stevie Ray and Santana and Hendrix and just pure blues.

I've been listening to Gretchen Menn quite a bit. She has a very nice feel in her playing.

She hasn't quit her day job with Zeparella yet. Nice Jimmy Page clone-work
