It's a song for Sunday and for a new time.....but I do imagine it would scare the daylights outta me, should it happen for real:

Written By: Alfred Williams
Music By: Joe Arzonia
Words and Music Adapted By: Terry Kluytmans

A preacher went out a-hunting,
Was on a Sunday morn,
And though it was against his religion,
Still he took his gun along.
He shot himself a couple of geese
And one gigantic hare,
And on his way returning home
He met a great big grizzly bear.
The bear marched out
In the middle of the road
And he waltzed to him so you see,
The preacher got excited,
Dropped his gun as he climbed a tree.
The bear sat down upon the ground
And the preacher climbed on a limb,
He cast his eyes to the God in the skies,
And these words he said to Him:

"Oh, Lord, didn't you deliver
Daniel from the lion's den?
Also deliver Jonah
From the belly of the whale and then,
Three little children from the fiery furnace,
So the Good Books do declare.
Now Lord, if you can't help me,
For goodness' sake, don't you help that bear!"

The preacher stayed up in that tree
For all the rest of the night,
He said, "Oh, Lord, if you don't help that bear
Then there'll be one dreadful fight,"
Just about then the limb let go
And he then came tumbling down,
You should have seen him get his razor out
Before he struck the ground.
He hit the ground
Bouncing right and left, it's true,
He put up a really strong fight,
The bear began to hug him,
And he squeezed him with all his might,
The preacher then lost his razor
Still the bear held on with a vim,
He cast his eyes to the God in the skies
And once more he said to Him:

"Oh, Lord, didn't you deliver
Daniel from the lion's den?
Also deliver Jonah
From the belly of the whale and then,
Three little children from the fiery furnace,
So the Good Books do declare.
Now Lord, if you can't help me,
For goodness' sake, don't you help that bear!"

Come on folks...get with the program. Very Happy

Littlek, I followed a lot of threads today, most of which had to do with unbridled aggression. It bewilders me. The program that I had in mind was a program of diffusion..like who cares? Well, I still do. A2K is just a tiny picture of the world at large.

Aggression! Really? Glad I missed it. So, diversive lyrics, then?

Just a reminder, my young friend, that when the world gets too much with us...we turn to the frivolous..and that is not a weakness..it's a strength.

I saw an old Ozarkee
A dressed up in a bear suit.
Either that, it seems to me,
Or he was very hirsute.

Hey, Beedle. Smile hirsute is better than a hair shirt anytime.

littlek, Think superannuated and then you'll begin to feel youngish. Very Happy

Happy EST!

Similar joke ends... "oh Lord, make this bear a Christian..."

And the bear says "We thank You for what we are to recieve"

It's all I could come up with on short notice, before coffee, of Episcopalian.

Unitarians... unless the minister is there, it's more like, "Food! Let's eat!"

Heh, heh! I used to think it terrible that one of my friends used to joke and say: Good bread, good meat, good God, let's eat.

BTW, are you aware that this year the Hatfields signed a peace treaty with the McCoys? (News story c. September...)

Shows that anything is possible, at least where moonshine is concerned...

Good grief, Beedle. Really? Some time back I saw that there was still a contention over who could be buried where. The movie Matewan gave me some insight into the true feud. I know two ballads about the feud, but I swear I couldn't find all the words, and could only remember part of one.: Here's a link to the history.

http://www.matewan.com/History/feuds.htm.

The song goes something like--

Oh, the Hatfields and McCoys,
They were restless mountain boys,
They could shoot a squirrel's eye out at twenty feet,
They could fire a rifle quicker than it took your eye to flicker....
Can't remember the rest.

There was another one that my dad sang:

Something like--
Way back in the Tennessee mountains,
Away from the sins of the world.
Old Dan Kelley's son stood and leaned on his gun,
Thinking of Jeb Turner's girl.
Young Dan was a hot blooded youngster,
His Dad raised him sturdy and right.

Damn. Wish I could remember the rest. Mad

That's odd. The link didn't work. Let me try again:

I'll keep looking for those lyrics.
