Irish folk pioneer Liam Clancy dies in Cork at 74

DUBLIN " Irish balladeer Liam Clancy, last of the Clancy Brothers troupe whose feisty, boozy songs of old Ireland struck a sentimental chord worldwide, died Friday in a Cork hospital. He was 74.

Clancy died in his hospital bed flanked by his wife Kim and daughters Siobhan and Fiona, his manager and family said. He suffered for years against incurable pulmonary fibrosis, the same lung-destroying disease that claimed one of his older singing brothers, Bobby, in 2002.

Ireland's arts minister, Martin Cullen, led nationwide tributes to Clancy, praising his "superb singing, warm voice and gift for communicating in a unique storytelling style

This from NPR

December 4, 2009 - Bob Dylan once called Liam Clancy "the best ballad singer I've ever heard."

Clancy died Friday at a hospital in County Cork, Ireland. He was 74.

It was in New York City that he made his name as a singer in a group with two of his brothers, Tommy and Paddy, and another singer named Tommy Makem.

The Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem were all aspiring actors who sang for fun at the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village. When John Kennedy became president, things Irish became fascinating, and in 1961, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were booked onto the hugely popular Ed Sullivan Show to sing one song. Then another act canceled and the Irish musicians found themselves performing on national television for more than 10 minutes.

Their exuberant performance earned them immediate acclaim. John Hammond signed them to Columbia Records. Soon, all of the folkies were wearing Irish sweaters like the Clancys. They went from taverns and folk clubs to the stage of Carnegie Hall.

Liam Clancy was the last surviving member of the group. Tommy Makem died two years ago. Tommy Clancy died in 1990, followed by his brother Paddy eight years later.

I particularly liked the Clancys performing with Tommy Makem on Dylan's When the Ship Comes In. I listened to it on youtube recently, but it has been removed.
