HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH SLUGS IN THE GARDEN

Merry Andrew is helping Seaglass prepare the ground for a salad and herb garden. The soil is store bought dirt and local cow manure over lava.

Slugs are a problem. Anyone had experience with slugs in a tropical garden?

@Sglass,
A long ago thread, Seaglass, with lots of good ideas (& some quite funny moments) about getting rid of snails & slugs. Sorry, not specifically advice for tropical gardening:

Environmentally friendly ways to murder snails .... kindly:

@sullyfish6,
I second the beer and the slug pellets. Both are fatal to the slugs. We go with the pellets. The beer will dry out frequently and have to be replaced, but if you don't like chemicals you might like it better.

Yes, the pellets work and the best kind are META, they have pellets for both dry and wet weather. But I like to go out and snip a few in half as a warning to the other slugs, too.

@djjd62,
Ha ha!

On slugs, I'm not so sure, but I bet they'd respond to being sprayed with ammonia as easily as snails do. It's quite satisfying if you have the soul of a snail killer like I do. Another thing that may work is a copper strip - for example on the edge of a raised bed, so that they'd have to climb over it to get to the bedded plants. Again, I didn't have slugs, only snails, so you might double check if others here or on google agree with me.

@ossobuco,
I have only seen one and it was on my kitchen floor.

We put up a bird feeder which not only attracks birds, but feral chickens, Kalish pheasants, turkeys. So maybe they are helping with slugs . And the birds have been harvesting our strawberries.

This place has proven to be a wonderful place for Andy to recoup from his surgery. He has a good tan, goes hiking in the caldera and has a good appetite.

I want to thank you for your suggestions.
