POPUP BLOCKER

Reply Sun 21 Sep, 2003 02:57 pm
i find that more-and-more popups appear when accessing websites; even european sites have a lot of them, and sometimes i find it difficult to get rid of them.i scrolled through various able2know forums but found no reference to it. a local computer store gave a solution for windows XP users : start>run>type : services.msc>scroll down to messenger>right click>select STOP>right click again>select properties>disable it under : STARTUP>EXIT ... i have windows ME and was unable to use the suggested solution. using google i found a popup blocker being offered(for free, i believe) by www.STOP-SIGN.com anyone have a solution or make use of STOP-SIGN ? thanks for your help ! hbg.

Never tried it. Somehow, I unknowingly got Earthlink's (ISP) pop up blocker activated, and for several days, every time I tried to access a link within a2k, including spellchecker, I got a glimps of a little red fist, but no linkage. Oh well. You may have found something more useful.

roger : was the little red fist trying to punch you in the eye? will be away for the next three weeks. when i'm back' i'll be taking the computer for a thorough cleaning to the store and see if they have a solution for popups. i'm kind of leary to install the "free" software; usually it results in an avalanche of unsolicited mail. thanks for your interest, roger. i'll report back in about a month. hbg

many ads are caused by spyware which can be cleaned off your system using ad-aware.

ooooh, hamburger's going to have some fun with all of this when he gets back. i just remembered that he uses the google toolbar already, so that's obviously not doing it's job properly.

I use Firebird as a browser.

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/releases/0.6.1/MozillaFirebird-0.6.1-win32.zip

You can enable pop-up blocking from within the browser. It kicks ass and is standard compliant. If everyone used it my life would be so much easier.

The pop-up windows appear because you have some programs that run from start-up and were sent there by previous sites you have accesed. To remove them run msconfig and remove from the start-up page all the programs that were added by these sites.

You could try ZoneAlarm Pro, which has a pop-up blocker. But the problem with that is sometimes you'll get irritating error messages from websites and some sites won't display properly.

I use the free pop up stopper from panic ware - i am really pleased with it - it was recommended somewhere on A2K.

You have to switch it off to use some sites as it disables the pop ups within them but it is easy to click on and off.

I've never received the irritating offers of webcams in odd peoples rooms since!
