@Linkat,
It's a goey! (sorry, Goanna) we have a couple wandering around campus.

Did some research - the article calls it a water monitor lizard (from Asia) it shares a genus (Varanae) with Goannas. Here's a Goanna:

@hingehead,
The lizard in the article is a monitor lizard, genus Varanus, which includes all species of monitor lizards. I wouldn't believe anything the article says. It says the lizard is 6 ft long and weighs 100 pounds. Since the tail is at least half the length of a lizard, that would mean a 3-foot body, maybe 20 pounds or so.

Goanna is an Australian term for any monitor lizard, and is believed to be derived from a mispronunciation of iguana, an unrelated family of lizards.

@hingehead,
And it climbs up the side of your house? If I had one of those hanging on the side of my house I'd freak out.

If it climbs up the side of your house? It now owns your house and everything in it.

@coluber2001,
Parented, the largest of the monitor species known as goanna in Australia, can grow to slightly over 8 feet long.

Around here we get 2-inch Mediterranean Geckos clinging to the outside walls, and sometimes inside, but this is ridiculous. It looks like it could eat a small child.

@tsarstepan,
I'm guessing this would make it difficult for Cuckoos to infiltrate Gouldian Finch nests.
