Hooker was the "GI" general of his day. He took command of the Army of the Potomac after Burnside was relieved, and Hooker did as much as he could to improve moral. He was responsible for the corps patches by which troops could be identified, and which instilled a measure of
esprit de corps. He also lifted restrictions on sutlers which had been put in place by his prudish predecessor, and the "camp followers" who flooded into the army were quickly dubbed "Hooker's girls."
