@hingehead,
Love that "obstacle thing."
Off topic but not entirely..
I'm too balance-fragile now to adventure into "foreign" trains or metros anymore, but I've soooo enjoyed them when I have, in Mexico City and a lot in Italy. I'd really like to ride the rails in Tokyo (and other places in Japan) but I'd probably turn into a sardine with no brine in complete confusion.
This enjoyment was started early by my parents, as when I was a kid, we crisscrossed the U.S. by train a bunch of times. Loved it..
I wish train travel would be less expensive here in the U.S. I'd still like to take to the rails between Albuquerque and Los Angeles. Especially if they still have a guide in the observation car commenting on what you are seeing in the southwest. If.. I liked the guide.
@ossobuco,
I rode the Amtrak from Phoenix to Orlando...took 2 days...great scenery, lousy sleeping arrangements.
@panzade,
Most of my U.S. train travel was in the fifties, what I think of as train glory days. Dining cars, cocoa in nice pots.. kind of prehistoric.
