Suppose it depends on who and where you are! America is a big place ... Sure, some say discussion, chat, talk ( as in "honey, we have to talk"), tete-e-tete or face to face, jaw, chew the fat.... there's also a "come to Jesus"(that's a serious conversation), or a 'sit down'... I'm sure there's plenty more but that's all I can think of for right now.

Let's see ... how about it's "an intense effort by one side in a discussion to gain cooperation from the other side." It generally would have consequences or the threat of involved - like when disciplining a child or an employer to employee breaking a (minor?) company rule say. Clear as mud?
