What's the song/singer - Half a world away?

Reply Tue 16 Sep, 2003 03:12 pm
Hi! Hope someone can help me out. I'm trying to work out the title/singer of a ballad type song from the mid/late 80's by a mal singer. The lyrics I remember were something like:

I wish I was half a world away,
Half a world away,
Half a world away with you.
I wish I had wings that I could fly,
Cross all the lonely, lonely miles,
But here I am tonight
Half a world away.

I haven't heard this song in years, but would love to track it down.
Please tell me I'm not imagining hearing it! Confused

This the one?

Half The World Away (4:25)

Written By Noel Gallagher Published by Creation Songs Ltd / Sony Music Publishing

I would like to leave this city
This old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And when I leave this island I'll book myself into a soul asylum
And I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go still scratching around the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down.

So here I go still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind if very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

Here's another with that phrase.

SONG Half A World Away
ARTIST R.E.M.

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
high alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hand is tired my heart aches
I'm half a world away here
my head sworn
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Go it alone
Hold it along and hold, hold.
This lonely deep sit hollow
I'm half a world
Half the world away
My shoes are gone
My life spent
I had too much to drink
I didn't think
and I I didn't think of you
I guess that's all I needed
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall and hold hold.

Oh this lonely world is wasted
Pathetic eyes high alive
blind to the tide that turns the sea
This storm it came up strong
it shook the trees
And blew away our fear
I couldn't even hear

To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall and hold hold.

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
high alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hands tired my heart aches
I'm half a world away and go.

Not REM or Noel
It's not the REM track or the one by Noel Gallagher, so I'm still being driven crazy trying to find out who it was by. It was definitely a solo male singer, from 1988 or earlier. A friend recorded it from the radio at the time, but she can't remember any more than I can now!

Thanks for the suggestions. Any more ideas would be greatly welcomed. Smile

Ok, here's another. If this isn't it, are you able to remember any of the other phrases?

ADMIRAL TWIN LYRICS
HALF A WORLD AWAY LYRICS

You don`t have to say you need me
We`ve been down that road before
Need always leads to trust, you know,
And trust is a game we don`t play well.
And you don`t have to say you want me
Wanting makes you weak and pale
Blink once if you want to be near me
Twice if you`d rather I live in Hell.
I would beg you not to leave me but you`re here
I would tell you to walk out on me today
But you`re half a world away.
You don`t have to say you forgive me
I don`t wanna make you a liar
You`ve said it so many times before
Thus quoth the raven "Nevermore."
And you don`t have to say you love me
That`s a fire you`ve come to hate
It used to warm your throat like wine
But now you`re burning my valentines.
I would beg you not to leave me but you`re here
I would tell you to walk out on me today
But you`re half a world away.
Oh you`re half a world
You`re half a world away
Oh you`re half a world
You`re half a world away
I would beg you not to leave me but you`re still here.
I would tell you to walk out on me today
But you`re half a world away.
Oh you`re half a world
You`re half a world away
Oh you`re half a world
You`re half a world away

A few more lines
No, that wasn't it either I'm afraid. Here are a few more lyrics I recall, from the first verse I think.

This loneliness will never end
I think about you now
I wonder what you're doing at this moment.

Umm.. I'm not to sure of the lines following that before it heads into the chorus I posted. Hope that might jog someone's memory though! Smile

Ooooh
I know that song, I've been looking for that same song but have yet to find it. I'm 21, and it's a song I remember from when I was really lil,...I'd love to know the name and artist of that song,...anyone who knows it please let us know.

I know the song you're talking...it's like..."I wish I was half a world, half a world away, with you, I wish I had wings so that I could fly..." that's all I remember, but gosh it's an awesome song, isn't it.

I'd love to hear who sings it.

Doesn't look like anyone has transcribed it onto the internet yet.

You said you sent an email to the radio station where you first heard the song. Can you tell me the name of the radio station or their call letters?

I'll see if I can find anything using that info.

I'm not imagining it then!
It's great to hear that someone else remembers the same song! Very Happy It was indeed a lovely song - very wistful.

I never contacted the radio about it, but I'd think it would have been on either Radio 1 or Capital Radio that I heard it, both UK stations. As close as I can guess, the year would have been 1987.

Anyone got any other ideas as to how I could discover the singer/actual title/rest of the lyrics? I recall the tune clearly enough, but that's not much use here.

Oops, sorry. I confused your request with another obscure one I am helping someone else find. Having similar troubles with both requests.

If you can remember anymore words from the lyrics that might help.

Was it one of the top 100 tunes of that year or one of the lesser known/played ones? I might be able to find something that way.

I dunno, I'm gonna keep trying, it seems you can recall far more lyrics of the song than I can. I'm gonna try sumtin' out, but first, I need you to post as much of the lyrics you can remember, maybe somewhere, somehow, I can pull it up, cuz I'm certain its somewhere out there jus' waitin to be found. And jus' like you, I'm sure I wasn't hearing things or worse imagining that song being played,...I'm way too young to be going nuts already, hehe.
Thnx

I doubt the song was one of the top 100 for the year. I only heard it a lot because of my friend recording it at the time. This is what I recall of the lyrics, beginning with the 2nd line I think. (My friend must have been slowing hitting the record button!)

This loneliness will never end
I think about you know,
I wonder what you're doing at the moment.

'Cos here tonight the rain is falling down
I reach for you as you come around
But here I am tonight, half a world away.
(Not sure about these lines)

I wanna be half a world away,
Half a world away,
Half a world away with you.
I wish I had wings that I could fly
Cross all the lonely, lonely miles,
But here I am tonight, half a world away.

I've no idea of any other words.

Thank you for all your help with this. Smile

I love that song too
It's so funny, I was actually searching for the lyrics and the name of the person who sings this song when I stumbled on this website. I had to sign up, because I really would love to know as well. I haven't heard it in over 13 years now, but I think I remember just a little of the lyrics other than the chorus.

the 1st verse
"I can't fall asleep, this loneliness won't let me go. My thoughts drift off to you, I wonder what you're doing at this moment.......Would you think of me, when it gets around to you, half the world away..."

then it goes something like:
"Every letter you write, helps me through one more night..."

Definitely the same song. It's reassuring to know that it's not just in my imagination. I hope someone manages to let us know who sang it! Smile

The song half a world away
As far as I can remember, the song Half a world away was recorded by an artist named either paul or al johnson. I have not heard it in years myself and wish I could buy the record, however no one seems to know the artist or the song. Maybe your local radio station can help.

Definitely not the song for which you are searching (especially you have now found that song), but a rocking song using that very same line, and I just can't stop myself from posting:

"Gainesville Rock City" by Less than Jake

This map hung up on the truck stop hallway door
is looking worn and I can hardly read it anymore
I feel like I'm a speck thrown on the map
and I can't help my urge to laugh
I never used to feel like that
Well I'm half awake half a world away
all my past mistakes and every wasted day
I wouldn't have it any other way
I'll try through my haze and half shut eyes
to count up all the reasons why
I should be back at home tonight
Half awake half a world away
all my past mistakes and every wasted day
proves that I'll never change
I'll always stay the same
I wouldn't have it any other way

I've been searching for that song for a while now. i think the singer is Paul Johnson(I'm not 100% certain) but I know it. Great song. You have some of the lyrics right.
I wanna be half the world away
I wanna be half the world away
I wanna be half the world away
With You
I wish I had wings that I could fly
Across all those long and lonely nights (I think Very Happy )
I wanna be half the world away with you

I used Kazaa but only got the Oasis and other versions. I need it. if you come across a copy mail me([email protected]).

And the search goes on da da dum da dum dida.........

Not sure if anyone is still interested but I think I found the song!

It's by Rene Froger and I just got an online 30 sec preview. It doesn't sound 100% like what I remembered, but then again that was over 10 years ago. Anyways This is one track I'm gonna buy Smile Might report back later.
