How about Grappa? Anyone tried it? When I was in Italy last spring with a friend we had dinner with a local guy we met in Manarola. He ordered us all Grappa after dinner. I think I may have taken two sips but my friend said "Just throw it back". And that she did. I think I would have thrown up right there and then.

He tried to kiss me that night. Maybe that's why he bought the American's Grappa!

Ever had a caffe corretto? Literally a 'corrected' coffee. It's an espresso with grappa. Perfect when you've hiked from Levanto to Monterosso in the rain.

So what do you look for when ordering a good grappa? And I'm willing to try new things. Is it tasty?

Just had this discussion with Osso, I contend that there is no such critter as "good grappa" she contends otherwise.

When Grappa is good, it's very good, most of them are bad though and I'm not so sure, we have good ones here in the USofA.

Quality Grappa comes from Nardini, Jacopo Poli, and Nonino.

Stay away from Grappa that's filled into elaborate, decorative bottles -
that's mostly a bad grappa cached into a beautiful bottle.

I tend to agree with Dys except to say that there is certainly variable levels of quality in grappa - but the best is only a little more tolerable than the worst. Actually that's unfair. Either you have a taste for it or you don't. I don't and can't appreciate the subtle variations in 'flavour'.

But Limoncello....

Hey, I can't afford good grappa. Just sipped someone else's once. That link I gave earlier lists some of those CJane mentioned.

I'm not doubting you can get good grappa in LA and SF and NYC, and a few other US cities, but there ain't none in my local market. But, perhaps at Sunflower or the Jubilation spirits store...

Me, I like Calvados.. something else I haven't had in years. (Had some the day I passed by boards.)

Calvados = apple brandy, I had a bottle of it once.

I'm more of Benedictine, Drambuie, Lochan Ora sort of dude. I did get a taste for Disaronno in Italy - don't normally like amaretto-like liqueurs.

well, i survived, with surprisingly no headache. surprisingly, since my night consisted of three thai lemongrass martinis, some beer, three gin and tonics, then some wine, and even smoking some (which happens once in a few years). my polish friend proved to be all that and then some... it was a crazy night, but very pleasant.
spent part of it with my theatre friends in a gay bar stuffing dollar bills down the go-go boys speedos, trying to ignore the hard porn on the tv screens all around, dancing away with all the guys (since i was THE only woman there).
yeah, the usual saturday night.
