In my opinion, (at this particular moment) good music does not necessarily meet a standard form and align perfectly with measures and whatever other esoteric terms a learned musician could throw at me. Good music doesn't even have to make sense!
Good Music evokes emotion. It triggers something inside you.
Remember that song you heard that automatically made your jaw drop, syncing with everything inside you. You haven't even taken the time to listen to the lyrics which are irrelevant at the moment. This is why some of the simplest of songs with lyrics comprised of one syllable words can become a hit. I am amazed by this. Now, when I say "hit" I do not speak of that mainstream bubble gum shyt that even I could create....
For instance, when I first heard
"Maps" by the yeah yeah yeahs, I couldn't stop listening to it. the only lyrics that I could initially decipher was "they don't love you like I love you", I couldn't quite grasp the rest, but it didn't matter. I understood the emotion, the desire behind it. And the video, phuking blew me away.
The most enthralling musicians, (IMO, at this particular moment) never quite spell it out for you.
They are very vague about the message, causing you to use your brain.
A good example of that type of musician would be Dave Matthews, ( the greatest band ever...IMO, at this particular moment)
"Crush" is probably not the best example of just how vague and symbolic he can be but it is however, a good example of a song evoking a mood.
Do you think the emotion evoked is more influential than the lyrics themselves? Provide examples please...
