She Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina
Kinks

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
To wear at all her social affairs
She wears it when she's cleaning the windows
She wears it when she's scrubbing the stairs
But you will never see her at Ascot
She can't afford the time or the fare
But she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care

He's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
Because it makes him feel like a Lord
But he can't afford a Rolls or a Bentley
He has to buy a secondhand Ford
He tries to feed his wife and his family
And buy them clothes and shoes they can wear
But he's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
So he don t care

Buddy can you spare me a dime
My wife is getting hungry
And the kids are crying
This poverty is hurting my pride
Buddy can you spare me, buddy can you spare me a dime

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
And her neighbors think it suits her a treat
But she hasn't any food in the larder
Nor has anybody else in the street
But to look at her you'd think she was wealthy
'Cos she smiles just like a real millionaire
'Cos she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care, she don't care, she don't care, she don't care

Sheryl Crow mentions Geronimo, Marilyn Monroe, Benny Goodman and John Coltrane if "If It Makes You Happy".

Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" is a huge long list of reference points.

you just reminded me of this song billy set it to the tune of "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill"

I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night
Billy Bragg

I dreamed I saw Phil Ochs last night
Alive as you and me
Says I to Phil "You're ten years dead"
"I never died" says he
"I never died" says he

The music business killed you Phil
They ignored the things you said
And cast you out when fashions changed
Says Phil "But I ain't dead"
Says Phil "But I ain't dead"

The FBI harassed you Phil
They smeared you with their lies
Says he "But they could never kill
What they could not compromise
I never compromised"

"Though fashion's changed and critics sneered
The songs that I have sung
Are just as true tonight as then
The struggle carries on
The struggle carries on"

With the song of freedom rings out loud
From valleys and from hills
Where people stand up for their rights
Phil Ochs is with us still
Phil Ochs inspires us still

another from mister bragg

the first two verses are loaded

Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards

It may have been Camelot for Jack and Jacqueline
But on the Che Guevara highway filling up with gasoline
Fidel Castro's brother spies a rich lady who's crying
Over luxury's disappointment
So he walks over and he's trying
To sympathise with her but he thinks that he should warn her
That the Third World is just around the corner

In the Soviet Union a scientist is blinded
By the resumption of nuclear testing and he is reminded
That Dr Robert Oppenheimer's optimism fell
At the first hurdle

Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was supposedly inspired by the deodorant:

I believe that "the day the music died" refers to February 3, 1959, when Holly, J. P. Richardson (the Big Bopper, one hit wonder with "Chantilly Lace") and Ritchie Valens went down in a Beechcraft.

from one of my favourite kinks albums "muswell hillbillies"

Oklahoma U.S.A.
Kinks

All life we work but work is bore,
If life's for livin' what's livin' for,

She lives in a house that's near decay,
Built for the industrial revolution,

But in her dreams she is far away,
In Oklahoma U.S.A.
With Shirley Jones and Gordon McRea,

As she buys her paper at the corner shop,
She's walkin' on the surrey with the fringe on top,

Cos in her dreams she is far away,
In Oklahoma U.S.A.,

She walks to work but she's still in a daze,
She's Rita Hayworth or Doris Day,

And Errol Flynn's gonna take her away,
To Oklahoma U.S.A.,

All life we work but work is a bore,
If life's for livin' then what's livin' for.

Field Commander Cohen references Fidel Castro. - Leonard Cohen.

Cohen also wrote: You were Marlon Brando; I was Steve McQueen.
The song is: Is This What You Wanted.

Set: doh, how could i have forgotten that

Boomer: that's my understanding, but other references in the song, are about other musicians, or so i've heard

some good stuff in this tune from mr buffett

Pencil Thin Mustache
Jimmy Buffett

Now they make new movies in old black and white
With happy endings, where nobody fights
So if you find yourself in that nostalgic rage
Honey, jump right up and show your age

Chorus:
I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

I remember bein' buck-toothed and skinny
Writin' fan letters to "Sky King" and Penny
Oh I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's Bandstand, Disneyland, growin' up fast
Drinkin' on a fake I.D.
Yeah, and Rama of the jungle was everyone's Bawana
But only jazz musicians were smokin' marijuana
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's flat top, dirty bob, coppin' a feel
Grubbin' on the livin' room floor (so sore)
Yeah, they send you off to college, try to gain a little knowledge,
But all you want to do is learn how to score

Yeah, but now I'm gettin' old, don't wear underwear
I don't go to church and I don't cut my hair
But I can go to movies and see it all there
Just the way that it used to be

Chorus:
That's why I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two-toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

Oh, I could be anyone I wanted to be
Maybe suave Errol Flynn or the Sheik of Araby
If I only had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could do some cruisin' too

Coda:
Yeah, Bryl-cream, a little dab'll do yah
Oh, I could do some cruisin' too

Whatever Happened To Randolph Scott
The Statler Brothers

Everybody knows when you go to the show,
You can't take the kids along.
You've gotta read the paper and know the codes
Of G, PG and R and X.
And you gotta know what the movie's about
Before you even go.
Tex Ritter's gone and Disney's dead
And the screen is filled with sex.

Whatever happened to Randolph Scott,
Ridin' the Trail alone?
Whatever happened to Gene and Tex
And Roy and Rex the Durango Kid?
Oh, whatever happened to Randolph Scott,
His horse plain as could be?
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the best of me.

Everybody's tryin' to make a comment
About our doubts and fears.
True Grit's the only movie I've really
Understood in years
You gotta take your analyst along
To see if it's fit to see.
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the industry.

Whatever happened to Johnny Mack Brown
And Alan Rocky Lane?
Whatever happened to Lash LaRue?
I'd love to see them again.
Whatever happened to Smiley Burnette,
Tim Holt, and Gene Autry?
Whatever happened to all of these
Has happened to the best of me.
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the industry.

She's So Square
XTC

Awful plastic boots that come above her ankle
Dayglo mini skirts just like a pop art spangle

Digs Vanilla Fudge buys lipstick by the pound
Gets that 'English' look resembles Kath McGowan

Have you seen her hair it's a style from heaven
Ah! she's nowhere she thinking this is 1967?

She's so square she's nowhere
She's so square she's nowhere

Take her to a disco and screaming Lord Sutch it!
Everyone must look but nobody must touch

What about her car? E type is the latest
How about the Yardbirds? Jeff Beck is the greatest!!

Have you seen her hair it's a style from heaven
Ah! she's nowhere she thinking this is 1967?

She's so square she's nowhere
She's so square she's nowhere

Oh gosh how could I forget? I was just listening to it today --

The Clash's "Spanish Bombs" about the Spanish Civil War has a lot of cultural references.

I was also listening to Great White sing "Once Bitten Twice Shy" today and I've always wondered if this was really someone:

Quote:
I didnt know ya got a rock n roll record
Until a saw your picture on another guys jacket
