Music that has saved your life

Has music ever saved your skin? Right at a time when you feel like you are ready to give up. Right at a time you are this close to doing something very stupid.

And a song changes your mind. Gives you that little bit to get you through.

Please share! Maybe one of your songs will save someone else's skin one day.

This isn't about how talented or how great an album or song it was. It's about what it did for you....and if you can tell the story and a bit about WHY too, that'd be great.

Let the wind take your troubles away ~~ by Jayhawks,
reminded me now and again that happiness is a choice, take a deep breath, and go on.

Ok, here's one of mine. Cheesy as hell and to sing it out loud has lifted me at a time it meant a lot.

The key to the Universe (Timo Tolkki)

Another day, is passing by
Nothing feels the same anymore
I see it clear, without fear
Complete order in my life
As I look into the blue sky
I feel so much alive
I have never felt like this before

We are the same, everywhere
We just want to be loved
We are confused, we are scared
Still we have to find our own way

Life is not always very easy,
there is time when it all fells black
But I tell you that there is always a way

And the key to the universe is love
And this key could free the mankind
Trust yourself
The voice within will guide you on your path of life
The key to the universe is love

For myself, it was no particular song, but all of the music I listened to. From about age 15, until about age 45, it sustained me in a way nothing else could. From Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, to Jerry Lee Lewis and Don Gibson; from Ray Charles and Harry Belafonte, to Lloyd Price and Little Richard; it was all good.

I have to agree with edgar that it's all music. Sometimes I choose it to reflect my mood, sometimes to change it. If I'm really down I sing -- I suspect the deep breathing required acts upon me physically to improve my mood. More years ago that I care to remember, I took part in college musicals and this song always pops into my head when I'm down:

Magic

When you attempt something hopeless,
something you know you can't do,
sometimes you pray
for a genie
or two.
But if something amazing should happen,
something that's magic
and new
chances are good that the magic
was you

For you can make your own magic
You can make your own magic
You can make your own magic
Magic

When something fabulous happens
try not to sit down and say,
"Somebody, somewhere, bewitched me, today!"
Stand
and
look at your self in the mirror
after the miracles through.
Why not believe that the magic
was you?

For you can make your own magic
You can make your own magic
You can make your own magic
Magic

Yow. More chance of music ending my life than saving it.

Just when you think everything is crap you see this on the playlist:

Quote:
I Am A Rock- Simon & Garfunkel

A winters day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.

I am a rock,
I am an island.
Ive built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Dont talk of love,
But Ive heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Let's just say that I was going through a rough time, and the song helped me to get through it.

Continuing on my point, here's a song I used to love to wallow in.

Tori Amos - Winter

Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose
Get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove
I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice
"Your must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I can't always be around"
He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and I'm here still waiting Withering where some snowman was
Mirror mirror where's the crystal palace
But I only can see the myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams
On the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself

He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear

2 I can think of off the top of my head.

1st is from my teen years. This song always calmed me. It's Yes's "Your Move"
Yes wrote:
I've seen all good people turn their heads each day
so satisfied I'm on my way.

Take a straight and stronger course to the corner of your life.
Make the white queen run so fast she hasn't got time to make you a wife.
'Cause it's time, it's time in time with your time and its news is captured
For the queen to use.
Move me on to any black square,
Use me any time you want,
Just remember that the goal
'Sfor us to capture all we want, anywhere,
Yea, yea, yea.
Don't surround yourself with yourself,
Move on back two squares,
Send an Instant Karma to me,
Initial it with loving care
Don't surround
Yourself.
'Cause it's time, it's time in time with your time and
its news is captured
For the queen to use.
Diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit didda.
Diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit
Didda.
Don't surround yourself with yourself,
Move on back two squares,
Send an Instant Karma to me,
Initial it with loving care
Don't surround
Yourself with yourself.
Don't surround yourself.
Send an Instant
Karma to me. Don't surround
yourself.
'Cause it's time, it's time in time with your time and its news is captured
For the queen to use.
Diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit diddit didda.

The second is from when I was in the middle of quitting a job I hated. It's The Style Council's "How She Threw it all Away"

The Style Council wrote:
Of all the things that money can buy
Freedoms never cheap
But all the things she needed in life - she had no need to keep.
Of all the things she asked of me
None were ever fun
And I'm no good at acting while - the cameras on the run.

Don't you know - she threw it all away
I wonder how she feels today.
She threw it all away
I wonder if she's there to stay.

I tried, a bit, to change into - something that I'm not
But trying to mould with dynamite is like giving lions spots.

Guess you knew - she threw it all away
Don't shed a tear there's no need to cry.
She threw it all away
I played both parts in the fool and i.

Yes, I know your hurting inside
But I can't stop those tears in your eyes, falling from your face
Everytime you fall apart
I knew at the start - when it happened again
It was the start of the end for us.

With all the things that money can buy
You'll never be alone
But thankfully you remembered the words
To I "can't buy me love".
