FTC Proposal to Create a National 'Do Not Call' Registry

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is proposing to amend the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR). The FTC's proposal includes creating a national 'do not call' registry. The FTC enforces the TSR, which protects consumers from unwanted late-night telemarketing calls and prohibits deceptive sales calls. Under the FTC's proposal, it would be illegal for telemarketers to call consumers who place their phone number on the national registry. This site presents details of the proposal along with tips on 'How to Reduce Unwanted Telemarketing Calls Now.'

I know you're looking at it from a legal standpoint, Sumac, but they only do it because it makes money. Now, if we would all just rudely hang up on them, they would be gone in a month.

roger- I have been on a "Do Not Call" list that is regulated by the state of Florida (They do SOME things right Very Happy ). Also enrolled in the Direct Marketing Association's opt-out list. Where I live in Florida, telemarketing is pervasive and totally obnoxious. It used to never stop. I would get 4-5 calls a night. Now I get maybe 1 a month.

There will ALWAYS be people who will fall for a slick talker. The people who are vulnerable, who really NEED to be educated about telemarketers, will probably NOT be the ones to join the opt-out list. So there will still be plenty of suckers left to call by the telemarketers!
