My husband is a Marine and my brother was one.

My husband had an honorable discharge - he filled his requirement and did not try to get out. He thought it was an excellent experience - not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but feels very proud of his experience.

My brother was like you - he tried to get out. He ended up getting a general discharge and I believe like you did something unethical to get out - he never did tell me the details.

That is why the motto is true for this particular branch - "The few the proud, the Marines."

I spent the best part of 24 years assigned to the Marines, and I loved it.
It taught me discipline, it showed me that I was stronger mentally then I had ever thought, and I wouldnt have traded that experience for anything.

Of course, I was a US Navy corpsman, but I was treated like a marine, went through much of the same training, and worked side by side with marines.

So maybe my experience doesnt count.

If I knew someone who had bailed like the original poster, I would never trust him or her with anything else. Sounds trite, but character does count.

I have worked with a lot of former marines. You want them as employees but you don't want them as your boss. Laughing

as if no one has ever lied to make turning in a resume easier

You cant just turn in a resume with the marines
A lot of times people really dont know what they got themselves into when they signed up. But try explaining that and you will be called a wimp and treated like crap

I do not advocate lying, but I can understand why people do it

Sounds like you believe you fooled them. Perhaps they believe they really understood the situation, were not fooled, and were glad to see you go.

I'm not making a value judgement here. Not everyone is cut out for the service or the USMC in particular. Certainly the discipline and the emphasis on both individual and group achievement & accountability are not everyone's cup of tea. The individual Marines I have known & served with are as varied a group of people as I have known anywhere else. They were united only by their willingness to accept and deal with the challenge.

Then they are plain old dumb! I can vouch for that first hand. My parents explained to my brother how difficult the Marines were and that it probably wasn't for him. Even the advertisements claim they are the most difficult branch of the US armed forces - some people just don't listen to reason. My brother (quite honestly) was lazy, didn't like authority - he was basically the opposite of what a Marine is.

The Marines did turn my skinney hippie lazy brother into a bulked up, good looking guy, but he was still the same inside.

The Marines really won't keep you, if you are that bad - the difference is getting an honorable, general or dishonorable discharge. An honorable you get all the benefits - which you pretty much have to serve the time you signed up for to get; the others have other issues associated with them.

Oh Jesus . . . that's not a motto, it's an advertising slogan dreamed up by a Madison Avenue firm feeding at the public trough, and selling the Marine Corps on television.

The motto of the United States Marine Corps is Semper Fidelis--"forever faithful."

Sorry messed up on the semantics - either way it is true in a sense - that those that can't handle the toughest branch of the military (aside from special forces and navy seals which are tough as well), end up being pushed out any way - like some one said before it is unlikely that the Marines fell for the lie, they probably wanted him out as much as he did.

It isn't that there is anything wrong with not being a right fit for the Marines - you just need to realize when you sign up whether you are right for this particular branch.

I have had family serve in all different branches of the service - so I have heard first hand experience from all.

There is something about Dys that makes it hard for me ever to agree with him.

In this case he may well not be as wrong as he usually is.

yeah these all seem to be "tough" jobs within the armed forces, but aren't all these including Seals, special forces - areas that you have to qualify to be a part of?

I think the differences is the Marines doesn't qualify you. Maybe they should and that way weed out these individuals that are so highly unlikely to survive the process.

As an aside, I did date a special forces guy once - he was hot big time. (don't tell my husband).
