Titter.
It was an official in South African courtrooms many years ago who had translated English court reports literally and whose job it was run around the court touching the breasts of all the ladies present when the Judge had cracked a witticism. "A titter ran round the court" was the original but as they didn't know it was a joke the judge had made not having an English sense of humour they read it how they did and they were eager to be seen to be dispensing justice in the proper civilised manner.
